Topango Triumphant In $100,000
La Senorita Stakes Selma, Texas (August 30, 2003)
- Topango, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Distant View, won her third
race in a row as she held off a game Homemaker to take the $100,000
La Senorita Stakes by a head.
The two-year-old filly blasted out of the gate and engaged pacesetter
Smoothmovinangel for the early lead in the one-mile turf race. After
running the first three-quarters in a contentious 1:11.70, Topango
shook loose from that rival in the stretch and dug in through to
hold off a fast-closing Homemaker by a head.
Trained by John Locke and ridden to victory by Weldon Cloninger,
Jr., Topango ran the one mile in 1:36.33 and paid $9.60 as the 4-1
second wagering choice.
Blondz Away finished a non-threatening third, 7 ½ lengths
behind the top two Truth By Ruth was another length back in fourth.
