Goosey Moose Wins $50,000 Spring
Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park Houston, Texas (March
22, 2008) - Sam Houston Race Park held the $50,000 Spring Stakes
Race, a seven furlong stakes race on the dirt track for accredited
Texas-bred horses, four years of age and up, on Saturday, March
22, 2008. After a strong out-of-the gate dash which saw Lil Jett
out in front of the pack well into the stretch, Goosey Moose ($10.20)
rallied from the pack on the outside and pulled into the lead crossing
the wire at 1: 23.68.
The seven-year-old gelding, trained by Danny Pish, beat out favored
Sandburr and jockey Paul Nolan, along with the Steve Asmussen-trained
Rain on Monday. Lil Jett finished second in the race, while Dreamsandvisions
was third and Sandburr took fourth place in the eight-horse field.
Winning jockey Quincy Hamilton remarked, “This horse is
a hard-running horse every time he hits the track. He gave it his
all tonight, and we managed to pull out a win down the last stretch.”
Goosey Moose, owned by Israel Flores Horses LLC, has raced in
several stakes races this Thoroughbred season, including the $100,000
Star of Texas Stakes at Texas Champions Day in December 2007, the
$100,000 MAXXAM Gold Cup in January and, most recently, the $50,000
Tomball Stakes.
Sam Houston Race Park will host the Connally Breeders’ Cup
Turf Festival, which features the most prestigious race of the meet,
the Grade III John B. Connally Breeders’ Cup, and marks the
closing day of Thoroughbred season, on Saturday, April 5, 2008.
Live Thoroughbred racing continues with races every Thursday,
Friday, Saturday and Sunday in March at Sam Houston Race Park. For
