Page Me Later Defeats Seven Fillies
in the $35,000 Sam Houston Oaks At SHRP (March 15,
2003)- Page Me Later won the first stakes of her career this
evening, capturing the one mile $35,000 Sam Houston Oaks. Owned
by the Long Odds Racing Stable and trained by former New York Jets
player Jim Hudson, the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Mutakddim
earned $21,000 for tonight's victory.
Rider John Jacinto had the mount and picked up his seventh stakes
win of the 2002/2003 Thoroughbred meeting. He settled Page Me Later
off the pace behind favorites My First Wife and Run Sarah Run and
asked her to run at the top of the stretch. She took to an opening
on the rail and rallied past Miss Listo, crossing the wire in a
time of 1:40.14.
"This filly has a lot of heart," said Jacinto. "I
had never ridden her, but I watched her races. I thought we had
a shot and when I saw the opening and asked her to go, she gave
me everything she had."
"We had a lot of trouble in her last race (an allowance on
February 28) and this time we had a clean shot all the way around,"
said Hudson. "Racing luck plays a big part in this game."
Miss Listo, winner of the Miss Houston Stakes on November 23,
ran second for trainer Steve Asmussen. Jeremy Beasley was in the
irons and had a clear trip, but could not catch the winner.
"She handled the distance great," said Beasley. "I
couldn't have asked for a better race. It just wasn't our night
to win. The three horse jumped up there and got lucky."
Post time favorite, Run Sarah Run, shipped into Houston following
her sixth place finish in the $50,000 Martha Washington at Oaklawn
Park. Trained by Bret Calhoun, Run Sarah Run was ridden by Eddie
Martin, Jr., who had piloted her to a win on the Fair Grounds turf
in January.
"She was well within herself and relaxed going down the backside,"
noted Martin. "When those horses came to her she kind of hopped
a little and went to flicking her ears. The distance was definitely
within her reach. We've been experimenting with blinkers in the
morning and she doesn't do that with them on."
Page Me Later, at 6-1, returned $14.40 to win, $4.40 to place
and $3.40 to show. The 3-7 exacta paid $49.40 and the 3-7-6 trifecta
returned $198.80. On Silver Wings, Onella, My First Wife, Valid
Desire and Our Lady Megan completed the order of finish.
Hudson indicated that Page Me Lady would be turned out for ten
days and be shipped to Lone Star Park.
