New York Harbor Sails To Victory
in Ketel One El Joven Stakes Selma, Texas (August
30, 2003) - After finishing second with Homemaker in the La
Senorita Stakes to fellow trainer John Locke’s Topango, trainer
William Leach turned the tables in the $100,000 Ketel One El Joven
Stakes as his charge, New York Harbor rallied four-wide on the far
turn to win the one-mile turf race by ½ length over the Locke-trained
Oncearoundtwice.
Unhurried early, New York Harbor, a bay two-year-old gelding by
Boston Harbor, lay next to last in the field of twelve as pacesetter
Bc’s Music led the way through the first three-quarters in
a lively 1:11.05. As the field rounded the far turn, jockey Terry
Stanton threaded New York Harbor through the 12-horse field and
set sail for the wire, catching Oncearoundtwice in a driving finish.
Paying $63.00 as a 30-1 longshot, New York Harbor ran the one mile
on the turf in 1:36.63 and improved his record to two wins out of
three starts.
There Goes Rocket, the pre-race favorite, finished third, a half-length
behind Oncearoundtwice. Full Moons Arisin settled for fourth, another
neck back.
