Malika's Gold Prevails in $100,000 M2 Technology Senorita Stakes at Retama Park
Selma, Texas (September 5, 2004) - Sandra M. Munn's Spin
Jazz Baby was sent off as the even-money favorite in the $100,000
M2 Technology Senorita Stakes for two-year-old fillies over the
Retama Park turf course on Saturday night, but $5.10-to-1 third
choice Malika's Gold sprang a mild upset to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths
over Ready to Live in 1:36.76. Spin Jazz Baby could do no better
than sixth place, beaten four lengths.
Malika's Gold was jostled at the start, but it did not deter her
from securing a stalking spot on the outside of Wild Alizone in
the early part of the race. Under jockey Casey Lambert, Malika's
Gold tracked Wild Alizone through fractions of :23.27 and :47.70.
Malika's Gold took charge nearing the quarter pole, getting six
furlongs in 1:11.58 over the firm grass course. She held sway in
the stretch, fending off a mild bid from Ready to Live to win comfortably.
Kristin's Charm rallied from far back to finish a non-threatening
third, a half-length behind Ready to Live and a neck ahead of Grassy
Strip, who was the longest shot on the board at 60-to-1. Frauline
Maria, Spin Jazz Baby, Hadif Runner, Our Leading Lady, Wild Alizone,
Vicars Lady and Champagne Bottle completed the order of finish.
Owned by Tim Hoese, Malika's Gold is a daughter of Gold Case and
the Cozzene mare Mucci Baby. Trained by Randy Oberlander, she earned
$60,000 for her M2 Technology Senorita victory.
