Stars of Texas Day Features Six
Stakes with $500,000 in Purses on Saturday at LSP
(July 10, 2008) - Texas-breds will take the stage Saturday at
Lone Star Park as six stakes races restricted to horses that were
bred in Texas are set to be run with purses combining for a total
of $500,000. First race post time for the 10-race program is scheduled
for 1:35 p.m., with the $50,000 Harold V. Goodman Memorial, for
three-year-olds going six-and-a-half furlongs, set to kick off the
stakes action as race four at approximately 2:59 p.m.
Following the Goodman in consecutive race order will be: the $50,000
Valor Farm Stakes for three-year-old fillies going six furlongs;
the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes (Staunch Avenger Division) for
two-year-old colts and geldings going five-and-a-half furlongs;
the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes (Pan Zareta Division) for two-year-old
fillies at five-and-a-half furlongs; the $50,000 Allen Bogan Memorial
for fillies and mares, three-year-olds and up, going one mile; and
the $100,000 Assault Stakes for three-year-olds and up going 1 1/16
miles.
Gold Coyote Favored in Goodman
Clarence Scharbauer Jr's Gold Coyote, trained by Bret Calhoun,
will be the one to deny in the 12th running of the $50,000 Harold
V. Goodman Stakes at Lone Star Park on Saturday. After recording
an impressive win in the Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial Stakes at
Lone Star Park on June 14, 2007's Texas-bred Two-Year-Old of the
Year will be after his second consecutive stakes win at the current
meet.
"He's doing great, better than ever," said trainer Bret
Calhoun. "He's at his best sprinting around one turn and he
proved himself against older horses in the McGregor last time. This
is a good spot for him to drop back in with three-year-olds and
we're looking for a peak performance."

Formal Flyer Seeks Third Straight Win in Valor Farm
Stakes
John Silverthorne Ranch Inc's Formal Flyer, trained by Danny Pish,
attempts to record her third consecutive victory, and second stakes
win, at the 2008 Lone Star Park Spring Meet when she takes on six
rivals in the 11th running of the $50,000 Valor Farm Stakes Saturday
at Lone Star Park. A winner of the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes
(Got Koko Division) here on May 10, Formal Flyer was most recently
seen winning a $30,000 optional claiming event going a mile over
turf here on June 12.

Heiligbrodt/Asmussen Send Out Tough Entry in Texas
Stallion Stakes (Staunch Avenger Div.)
Heiligbrodt Racing Stable and trainer Steve Asmussen have been
installed as 3/5 favorites with their entry of Belton and Justwill
in the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes (Staunch Avenger Div.). An
impressive winner of his first two starts, Belton was last seen
finishing a strong second to stablemate Lyin' Heart, who most recently
finished second in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs
on July 5, in the $125,000 TTA Sales Futurity Stakes (colt and geldings
div.) at Lone Star Park on June 7. Entrymate Justwill finished a
neck behind Belton in third that day.
"Both horses are doing very well right now," said Steve
Asmussen's head assistant at Lone Star Park Darren Fleming. "We're
looking for both of them to run well."

Bridesmaid, Tiffany Royal Formidable for Asmussen in
Texas Stallion Stakes (Pan Zareta Div.)
Will Farish's Bridesmaid, winner of the TTA Sales Futurity (Fillies
Div.) at Lone Star Park on June 7, and Heiligbrodt Racing Stable
and Keith Asmussen's Tiffany Royal, an impressive maiden winner
at Churchill Downs on May 10, give trainer Steve Asmussen an intimidating
one-two punch in the $125,00 Texas Stallion Stakes (Pan Zareta Div.).
"Bridesmaid has been training well since the Futurity and
we're expecting another big race from her on Saturday." said
Steve Asmussen assistant Darran Fleming, "Tiffany Royal is
a very fast filly, she showed that in breaking her maiden at Churchill,
and she can give them a run for the money as well."

Taptam Seeks First Stakes Victory in Allen Bogan Memorial
Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch's Taptam, trained by Donnie K. Von
Hemel, will be out to land her first stakes win in the $50,000 Allen
Bogan Memorial Stakes on Saturday at Lone Star Park. An impressive
winner in her most recent start over dirt on April 20, a race that
saw her finish six-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of subsequent stakes
winner Formal Flyer, Taptam will be out to make it two-for-two over
the Lone Star Park main track.
"Her last dirt start was a real nice race and we took a shot
with her on turf last time because it was tough to find the right
spot for her over dirt," said trainer Donnie K. Von Hemel.
"She's been training well and she'll be happy to get back on
dirt, and she looks like she's ready to go."

Multiple Stakes Winner Sandburr Set For 'Assault'
Feel The Thunder Stable's Sandburr, trained by Michael Stidham,
has been installed as a 9-5 favorite for Saturday's mile and a sixteenth
Assault Stakes at Lone Star Park. Winner of the $50,000 Premier
Stakes, the inaugural opening night feature race at Lone Star Park
in his latest outing on April 10, Sandburr will attempt to record
his second stakes win at the current meeting.
"We gave him a little breather after the opening night stakes
because we wanted him fresh and ready for this race, and we feel
that he is," said Sandburr's trainer Michael Stidham.
