Asmussen, Calhoun Poised for Saturday's
Stars of Texas Day at Lone Star Park (July 6, 2007)
- Leading trainers Bret Calhoun and Steve Asmussen hold strong hands
in five of the six stakes races that comprise Saturday's seventh
annual Stars of Texas Day at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Each of the 94 horses entered to run on the 11-race program was
bred in the Lone Star State, and they'll compete for $554,500 in
prize money.
The most anticipated race of the day will be a clash of promising
juveniles Namesake and Gold Coyote in the Staunch Avenger division
of the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes. Asmussen trains the Will
Farish-owned colt Namesake, who was a 3 ¾-length winner of
the $95,130 TTA Sales Futurity four weeks ago. Calhoun conditions
Clarence Scharbauer Jr.'s gelding Gold Coyote, who collected his
first win May 20 with a decisive 11 ¾-length score.
Many observers consider them to be the two best 2-year-olds in
the Lone Star Park barn area. "This race is loaded with talent,"
said Lone Star Park morning line oddsmaker Rick Lee. "Namesake
won the TTA Sales Futurity and earned strong speed figures, while
Gold Coyote was the most visually impressive two-year-old winner
this season. Both have real promising futures."
Calhoun and Asmussen will go head-to-head with strong contenders
in three of the six stakes events. Calhoun, a Grand Prairie native,
entered Friday night's action with a 45-42 lead over Asmussen in
the local trainer standings. Asmussen, who has been Lone Star's
champion trainer in eight of the last nine seasons, trailed Calhoun
by 14 wins on June 9, but has won with 18 of his last 49 starters
(36.7%) since then.
In the Pan Zareta division of the Texas Stallion Stakes for fillies,
Asmussen's Valid Lilly, runner-up to Mailey's Cat in the fillies
division of the June 9 TTA Sales Futurity, is the even-money early
choice while Calhoun's Glitter's Forum is lined at 5-2. Calhoun
also has Battle of Flowers, who's likely to attract attention from
hunch bettors because she's the No. 7 horse in the seventh race
on 07/07/07.
"It'll be very difficult to beat Valid Lilly," Lee said.
"She started her career with two gate-to-wire wins and came
back in the TTA Sales Futurity to duel early through some swift
early fractions. She couldn't hold off Mailey's Cat that day, but
she was well clear of the third place finisher. She should rebound
here at a short price."
Both divisions of the Texas Stallion Stakes will be contested over
5 ½ furlongs.
Calhoun has the 8-5 early choice for the $50,000 Allen Bogan Memorial
Stakes, a one-mile test for older Texas-bred fillies and mares.
Sweet Idea, a three-time stakes winner but winless in four local
starts, will be challenged by the Andy Konkoly-trained Olmosta,
who beat the 4-year-old filly by a neck in the April 21 JEH Stallion
Station Stakes over 6 ½ furlongs. Sweet Idea will be ridden
by Cliff Berry, who began Friday four victories shy of his 3,000th
career Thoroughbred winner.
Asmussen will start graded stakes winner Datrick, the 7-5 favorite
for the $50,000 Harold V. Goodman Memorial Stakes. Following a stakes-filled
juvenile campaign that included a triumph in the Grade III Kentucky
Breeders' Cup Stakes at Churchill Downs, the son of Favorite Trick
made his 3-year-old debut three weeks ago against elders in the
Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial Stakes, but finished fifth and was
beaten four lengths. Calhoun has two 3-year-olds for the 6 ½-furlong
sprint: 5-2 second choice Austin Lights and 12-1 outsider Be a Resident,
who was last year's champion 2-year-old at Lone Star.
In the $50,000 Valor Farm Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six
furlongs, Calhoun's Dyna's Diva, the 5-2 second choice, will have
to move forward in order to outrun 7-5 early favorite Moneyinmywranglers,
who is in top form with three consecutive daylight victories for
trainer Sharon Barker.
Neither Asmussen nor Calhoun has starters in the $75,000 Assault
Stakes for older Texas-bred males. Trainer Danny Pish, who has been
red hot since June 23 winning with 12 of his last 31 starters (38.7%),
will saddle 6-year-old gelding Goosey Moose in the 1 1/16-mile race
for the fourth straight year. He won back-to-back renewals in 2004-05
and was third behind Dreamsandvisions and Senior Amigo last year.
Dreamsandvisions, a 5-year-old gelding trained by Steven Duke, is
back to defend his title and was third in the Grade III Texas Mile
earlier this year.
All told, Calhoun has a dozen horses entered at Lone Star on Saturday,
while Asmussen is scheduled to start six.
The first of 11 live races begins at 1:35 p.m. CT. Grandstand gates
open at 11:30 a.m. All fans with a paid admission will receive a
free Stars of Texas Tumbler while supplies last. The drinkware -
decorated in red, white and blue with the Stars of Texas logo -
is perfect for either hot or cold drinks. One of the tumblers to
be given away will have a $5,000 grand prize inside.
On-track Stars of Texas Day entertainment includes an autograph
session with the Lone Star Park jockeys between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30
p.m. The local riders also will have a "Dunk-A-Jock" dunk
tank in the saddling paddock throughout the day. Both events are
fundraising efforts for the 19th annual "Jockeys Across America
Day," which benefits the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund for
injured and disabled jockeys and exercise riders. Fans can donate
$5 for an 8x10 color photo of the jockey colony at the autograph
session, while balls for the dunk tank are $1 each.
From 12-4 p.m., there'll be live country music by Haywire in the
Courtyard of Champions. In the Family Fun Park, there will be pony
rides, a petting zoo and bounce houses for the children in attendance.
After the racing concludes around 6:15 p.m. CT, Lone Star Park,
in conjunction with Time Warner Cable, will debut the first of its
four Movie Nights. Seabiscuit, the 2003 hit nominated for seven
Oscars, will be shown in its entirety on the infield JumboTron and
television monitors throughout the facility. Other movies scheduled
on Saturday nights are The Natural (July 14), Dreamer: Inspired
by a True Story (July 21) and Field of Dreams (July 28).
