Grand Prairie, Texas (Friday, July 5,2013) - The 17th Spring Thoroughbred Season comes to an end Saturday at Lone Star Park. Texas-breds will be center stage as four stakes races restricted to Thoroughbred horses foaled in the state are scheduled to be run with purses combining for a total of $281,260. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. and the first of 11 live races is at 1:35 p.m. The stakes action kicks off in the third at approximately 2:31 p.m.

Stars of Texas Day showcases the two divisional Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurities; the $86,480 colt & gelding division and the $94,780 filly division, both at five furlongs; as well as the $50,000 Assault Stakes for Texas-Bred three-year-olds & upward at one mile and the $50,000 Valor Farm Stakes for Texas-Bred fillies and mares three-year-olds and upward at six furlongs.

Race 3 Begins the Stakes Action with the $86,480 TTA Sales Futurity Colt & Gelding Division

A short but stout field has been drawn for the TTA colt & gelding division and of the six entered, half of the entry, Time Iz Flyin appears the principle threat. Conditioned by Allen Milligan, the two-year-old colt by Early Flyer won his debut impressively here on May 5 by 12 lengths under current leading rider, Lindey Wade. Wade will retain the mount. Yes It's a Fact makes up the other half of the entry. Both are owned by, Danny Keene who is leading the standings with 22 wins.

Two-time Lone Star Park Champion trainer (2010-11) Bret Calhoun, has conditioned the winners of this race for the past two years. He has three in this including Circustown Flyer and Golden Tune. Both won their debuts here also. Golden Tune, who is by My Golden Song on May 19 and Circustown Flyer also by Early Flyer on June 6 on a muddy track. Check Tune is the other Calhoun trainee in here.

Coyote Legend Seeks Third Victory in $50,000 Assault

The 17th running of the $50,000 Assault Stakes, named in honor of the Texas-bred which became horse racing's seventh Triple Crown winner in 1946, is for accredited Texas-breds, 3-year-olds and up going one mile on the main track. Carded as race six, scheduled post time is 3:55 p.m. CDT.

Winner of this race in 2010 and again in 2012, plus a third place finish in 2011, Coyote Legend, trained by Bret Calhoun, has been installed as the 9-5 morning-line favorite. The Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. six-year-old homebred gelding by Gold Legend is seeking that third victory here in the Assault. He was on a winning streak that began in December 2012 in which he won an upper level allowance at Remington Park. His two losses from his last five starts were both on turf, which he obviously dislikes. Returning to the dirt, a surface he prefers and to Lone Star where he has earned eight of his 17 career wins, a victory here is within reach.

Seeking his third straight win and second stakes win at the meet is Halls Family Trust's He Has Bling. The three-year-old gelding by Too Much Bling won an allowance here April 27 and won the $75,000 Texas Stallion Stakes on May 11. He is trained by "Queen of Bling" trainer, Danele Durham.

Field of 11 Entered in $94,780 TTA Filly Division

Stephen R. Brown's Closing Report, a convincing winner in her debut here on June 9 has been made the even money favorite by Lone Star Park odds maker, Rick Lee. Lee, who also clocks here mornings, said "she trained impressively up to her debut and ran like a filly with a future."

Closing Report is trained by Bret Calhoun. Calhoun also sends out Discreet Girl and Scooter’s Choice in this race.

Lasting Bubbles Seeking Second Stakes Win this Meet in $50,000 Valor Farm Stakes

Since winning the JEH Stallion Station Stakes here on April 13, Judy Peek's Lasting Bubbles has been unable to reach the wire first in two subsequent tries. Missing by a nose in the Lanes End Stallion Scholarship Stakes May 11 and again by just a half length in an allowance on June 7, the five-year-old mare by Pulling Punches has been right there. Trainer Ken Peek switches from regular rider Lindey Wade to Fabio Arguello, Jr. She has some tough competition in this race, but still has been given the slight edge in the line at 5-2.

A principle threat is Caroline Dodwell's Cowgirl N Up. The four-year-old filly by My Golden Song finished second behind Lasting Bubbles in the JEH and has since ran a third at Evangeline in the Tellike Stakes on May 18 and won at 30k Optional Claiming at Louisiana Downs on June 15 in her last two starts. She is listed at 3-1 for this race.

Tastefullyexcessive, winner of the $75,000 Texas Stallion Stakes for fillies and mares on May 11, is back on dirt after an uninteresting fifth place finish on the turf. She is owned by Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. and trained by Bret Calhoun. At 7-2 in the morning line, she could be the upset in here.
