Longshot Joe Move Sets Stakes Record
in Lone Star Park Turf Sprint Handicap (July 5,
2008) - Longshot Joe Move (20-1), owned and trained by Richard
J. Bird, set a new stakes record of 55.39 in winning the 12th running
of the five-furlong, $50,000 Lone Star Park Turf Sprint Handicap,
for three-year-olds and up, over a firm turf course at Lone Star
Park on Saturday.
Ridden by Eguard Tejera, Joe Move sprinted to the lead right from
the gate and led his opponents through opening fractions of :21.36
and 43.57, before stopping the teletimer in :55.39 to set a new
stakes record. The time, only .26 second off his own track record
of 55.13 set on July 15 last year, eclipsed the previous stakes
record of 55.60 set by Caro's Royalty in the inaugural running of
the race on June 28, 1997.
Distinguish finished one length back in second, and it was a half-length
back to Chamberlain Bridge in third.
"He has no slow in him at all," said winning owner/trainer
Richard Bird. "You can't rate him. He just wants to run."
With the win, Joe Move improved his record to nine wins from 43
starts and increased his career earnings to $155,109.
Joe Move paid $43.20, $18.00, $5.00, runner-up Distinguish returned
$6.20, $3.20, and the entry of Chamberlain Bridge (third) and Orphan
Brigade (fourth) paid $2.10 for show. Fearless Anthony, Nereus and
Daring Child completed the order of finish.
