Gold Coyote Defends Crown in $50,000
Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial at LSP Grand Prairie,
Texas (Saturday, June 13, 2009) - Clarence Scharbauer Jr.’s
Gold Coyote, trained by Bret Calhoun, was a comfortable winner in
the 13th running of the $50,000 Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial Stakes
over a fast main track at Lone Star Park on Saturday.
Ridden by Bobby Walker Jr., Gold Coyote rated kindly in third
position behind opening fractions of :22.00, and :44.77. Once the
bay son of Gold Legend was given his cue at the top of the stretch,
he ran away from his four opponents to complete the 6-furlong assignment
in 1:09.86. Deliverer finished three lengths back in second, and
it was another one-and-half lengths back to Cheese Factory in third.
“He broke real clean, but when the others went for the lead,
I elected to let them go, and when we hit the turn I was able to
get outside, ” said winning jockey Bobby Walker, Jr. “He
came to race today.”
“Right now he’s just really learning how to race,”
added winning trainer Bret Calhoun. “He’s learned to
settle, and he can be pretty deadly when he has his mind on running.”
With the win, Gold Coyote improved his record to 10 wins from
17 starts, including seven wins from 10 starts at Lone Star Park,
and increased his career earnings to $393,250.
Gold Coyote paid $3.80, $2.10, $2.10, runner-up Deliverer returned
$2.80, $2.10, and Cheese Factory paid $2.10 for show. Eye Wonder
was fourth and Upstream did not finish.
