Gold Coyote Faces Nine in $50,000
Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial Stakes at LSP (June
12, 2008) - Saturday's 12th running of the $50,000 Carter McGregor
Jr. Memorial Stakes, for accredited Texas-bred 3-year-olds and up,
to be run at six furlongs, features Clarence Scharbauer's 2007 Texas-bred
two-year-old of the year Gold Coyote. Trained by Bret Calhoun, Gold
Coyote won three of his five starts as a two-year-old, including
the Texas Stallion Stakes and the Middleground Stakes at Lone Star
Park, and will be seeking his second stakes win as a three-year-old
in the McGregor.
A winner of four of nine career starts for earnings of $204,950,
Gold Coyote was last seen finishing second in the one-mile-and-a-sixteenth
Texas Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park on May 10.
"Things didn't go exactly the way we wanted in his last start,
it was the first time that we had a really hot day this year, and
he still ran hard despite the change in weather and being asked
to run a little farther than he likes," explained Calhoun.
"Shortening him up to a sprint is going to help him a lot and
he's been doing very well lately. We think he's sitting on a big
race."
The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds
listed in parenthesis, consists of: Goosey Moose (Quincy Hamilton,
9-2); Gold Coyote (Bobby Walker Jr., 6-5); Snuck By (Cliff Berry,
5-1); Aggies Rule (Patrick Boxie, 15-1); Wilby's Ray (Richard Eramia,
12-1); Seneca Summer (Martin Escobar, 10-1); Lil Jett (Jeremy Collier,
15-1); War Bridle (Eddie Martin Jr., 20-1); Mucho Gato (Jorge Guzman,
9-5); and Toga Too (Eguard Tejera, 30-1).
Scheduled as race nine on the 10-race program, the Carter McGregor
Jr. Memorial Stakes has an approximate post time of 5:19 P.M. CDT.
