Defending Champ Gold Coyote Favored
in Saturday's $50,000 Carter McGregor Jr. at LSP
(June 11, 2009) - Saturday’s 13th running of the $50,000
Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial Stakes, for accredited Texas-bred 3-year-olds
and up, to be run at six furlongs, features Clarence Scharbauer’s
2007 Texas-bred two-year-old of the year, Gold Coyote. Trained by
Bret Calhoun, Gold Coyote has won six of nine starts at Lone Star
Park, including the Texas Stallion Stakes and Middleground Stakes
in 2007, the 2008 running of the Carter McGregor Jr., and most recently,
the Express Stakes on May 16.
A winner of nine of 16 career starts for earnings of $363,250,
Gold Coyote has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite
by track oddsmaker Rick Lee. The Bay son of Gold Legend is scheduled
to face five opponents in the McGregor.
“I thought his win in the Express was his most professional
performance to date,” said Gold Coyote’s trainer Bret
Calhoun. “He’s a very talented horse and it looks like
he’s putting it all together. We’re expecting a big
race out of him on Saturday.”
The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds
listed in parenthesis, consists of: Chief of Affairs (Eddie Martin
Jr., 5-2); Deliverer (Cliff Berry, 7-2); Gold Coyote (Bobby Walker
Jr., 2-1); Upstream (Martin Escobar, 8-1); Eye Wonder (Erik McNeil,
15-1); and Cheese Factory (Chris Landeros, 9-2).
Scheduled as race six on the 10-race program, the Carter McGregor
Jr. Memorial Stakes has an approximate post time of 3:55 p.m. CDT.
