Grand Prairie, Texas (May 31,
2010) - Wasted Tears, bred, owned, and trained by Bart B. Evans,
was not to be denied in the 14th running of the Grade 3 $200,000
Ouija Board Distaff over a firm turf course at Lone Star Park on
Monday.
A bay daughter of Najran, Wasted Tears put her high level of cruising
speed on display in winning her sixth consecutive start, including
four graded stakes, while successfully defending her title after
setting course record of 1:32.81 in the 2009 Ouija Board.
With Cliff Berry aboard, Wasted Tears set a swift but controlled
pace while recording fractions of 22.86, 46.33, and 1:09.71. Eventual
third-place finisher Bubbler applied constant early pressure, but
Wasted Tears kicked away from that rival at the top of the stretch
before holding off a late bid from runner-up Fortunia in stopping
the teletimer in 1:33.25 for the one-mile journey.
“She didn’t break quite as fast as I thought she might,
but she broke well, and she was very comfortable in getting to the
early lead,” said winning jockey Cliff Berry. “I knew
we were going fast, but she was within herself and she was being
very professional. She’s just a racehorse.”
With the win, Wasted Tears improved her record to 10 wins from
15 starts, including a perfect five-for-five over the Lone Star
Park turf, and with the $122,000 first-place prize, she pushed her
career earnings past a half million dollars to $558,598.
Wasted Tears paid $2.60, $2.20, $2.10, runner-up Fortunia returned
$6.20, $3.20, and Bubbler paid $2.20 for show. The Cat Who, Love
to Tell, and Slide on Bye completed the order of finish.
