Express Stakes Goes to Gold Coyote
at LSP Grand Prairie, Texas (Saturday, May 16, 2009)
- Clarence Scharbauer Jr’s Gold Coyote, trained by Bret Calhoun
and ridden by Bobby Walker Jr., outran his six opponents to win
the 12th running of the $50,000 Express Stakes over a sloppy track
at Lone Star Park on Saturday. Post time favorite Wind Water (9-5),
who won the Express in 2008, finished 1-¼ lengths back in
second, and it was another ½-length back to Por Que in third.
A bay son of Gold Legend, Gold Coyote sat a picture-perfect trip
behind dueling leaders through opening fractions of :22.05, :44.90.
He moved in on the frontrunners approaching the top of the stretch,
and willingly took over the lead before splashing through the lane
to stop the timer in 1:09.73 for the six-furlong journey.
"He came to race today,” said winning rider Bobby Walker
Jr. “At the three-eighths pole, I asked him to run just a
little bit, and when we hit the quarter-pole, I knew I had the ones
in front of me and that someone was really going to have to run
to come get him."
For the win, Gold Coyote earned $30,000 and increased his lifetime
earnings to $363,250. It was his ninth win from 16 starts. He is
six for nine with two seconds and a third at Lone Star Park.
Gold Coyote paid $10.40, $5.00, $3.40, runner-up Wind Water returned
$3.80, $2.80, and Por Que paid $2.80 for show. Independence War,
Prospective Kiss, Turnleftatthelight, and Orphan Brigade completed
the order of finish.
