| Halifax Flyer, Princess Turandot Win Texas Stallion Stakes at LSP

Prairie, Texas (May 14, 2011) - Halifax Flyer, owned by Charles and Myra Eddy and trained by Christie Grisham, proved best in the 8th running of the 1 1/16 miles, $100,000 Texas Stallion Stakes (Stymie Division) for three-year-old colts and geldings, over a fast main track at Lone Star Park Saturday.
With Lindey Wade in the irons, the bay son of Early Flyer settled into comfortable position behind a contested early pace through fractions of 23.32, 48.04 and 1:13.48. With a bold move leaving the quarter pole, Halifax Flyer surged to the lead and held well to the finish. A determined Tamtastic finished a half-length behind in second, and Sassy Maverick was another length back in third. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:46.84
"When I saw them go out in front of me four across the track, and nobody was to my inside or outside, I was thinking this couldn’t be setting up any better,” said winning jockey Lindey Wade. “He got a little tired late, but he wasn’t giving up the lead.”
With the win, Halifax Flyer gave trainer Christie Grisham the first stakes win of her career and recorded his third win from eight starts. The $60,000 first place prize increased his earnings to $94,904.
Halifax Flyer paid $9.60, $3.60 and $2.60. Tamtastic returned $2.80 and $2.20, and Sassy Maverick paid $2.20 to show. Completing the order of finish: Expect Dobbin, Sir Jaime, Maverick Prince, Alli’s Legend and Simply Gone.
Princess Turnadot Shows Class in Got Koko Division of $100,000 Texas Stallion Stakes
Princess Turandot, owned by Brian Cleveland and trained by Bret Calhoun, finished full of run to win the 8th Running of the $100,000 Texas Stallion Stakes (Got Koko Division) for 3-year-old fillies, over a fast main track at Lone Star Park Saturday
With Luis Quinonez aboard, Princess Turandot tracked early leaders Going Away Baby and Patty’s Pride through fractions of 24:08 and 49.35. After three-quarters of a mile in 1:15.52, the 3-year-old daughter of Gold Legend seized the lead and powered through the lane to complete the 1 1/16 miles assignment in 1:47.26. Triksta finished five lengths behind in second, and it was a neck back to Patty’s Pride in third.
"We had a good trip,” said winning rider Luis Quinonez. “She relaxed nicely for me, and when we got to the top of the stretch, I just let her go and she took off.”
With the win, Princess Turandot improved her record to two wins from 11 starts and increased her lifetime earnings to $123,863.
Princess Turandot paid $4.80, $3.00 and $2.60. Triksta returned $3.40 and $2.80, and Patty’s Pride returned $3.60 to show. Completing the order of finish were: Bonnies Judge, Intimidating Woman, Valid Carmen, Lil’ Mary Jane, Halfway Gone and Going Away Baby. |
