Speed Could Rule the $200,000 Sexton Mile This Sunday at Lone Star Park

Grand Prairie, Texas (Friday, May 4, 2018) - The 22nd edition of the $200,000 Steve Sexton Mile (Gr. III) will run Sunday, May 6 at Lone Star Park. Advance wagering will be available on Saturday, May 5, for the entire Sunday 10-race card. The Sexton Mile is also included as part of a $50,000 guaranteed late pick-4.

Grade 1 winner Girvin (Tale of Ekati) winner of last year's Haskell Invitational (Gr. I) hasn't raced since September, when he finished fifth in the Oklahoma Derby (Gr. III). Owner Brad Grady said the four-year-old colt has been training well and posted some decent recent works at Keeneland. Grady says the horse is ready, and if he does well Sunday, his next target will be the Stephen Foster Handicap (Gr. I) at Churchill Downs. For Sunday's Sexton Mile, it will be exactly a year and a day since Girvin was the high point earner in the Kentucky Derby. He finished 13th by 19 1/2 lengths. Girvin is the morning line second choice at 2-1. He is trained by Joe Sharp and will be ridden by Adam Beschizza.

Installed as the 9-5 morning line favorite, Bee Jersey (Jersey Town) with his quick early speed, could be uncatchable. The four-year-old colt began his career in the U.A.E. Winless after four starts at Meydan in Dubai, he shipped to the United States to the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Since the move, he has won three of four starts, two at Keeneland, including his maiden by three lengths, and most recently an optional claiming by 7 3/4 lengths. He was six lengths best in an allowance at Oaklawn Park previous to that. His only loss came at Churchill Downs, where he placed in an allowance. Ricardo Santana, Jr. will ship in for the mount.

Oh So Regal (Sidney's Candy), winner of the Sunland Park Handicap, galloped around the muddy oval here this morning. Trainer, Miguel Hernandez said, "I’m a little afraid of the Asmussen horse (Bee Jersey), but I like my horse; I think he has a good chance. I'm not worried about the big horse [Girvin]. I don't think he can catch us going a mile." Oh So Regal will be ridden by Alfredo J. Juarez, Jr.

The field for the Sexton Mile with jockey and morning line odds is:

  1. Futile, Lindey Wade 8-1
  2. Shotgun Kowboy, Luis Quinonez 10-1
  3. Franco, Lane Luzzi 30-1
  4. Oh So Regal, Alfredo J. Juarez, Jr. 7-2
  5. Girvin, Adam Beschizza 2-1
  6. Bee Jersey, Ricardo Santana, Jr. 9-5
  7. South Beach, Iram Diego 12-1

The Steve Sexton Mile is the scheduled ninth race on Sunday, May 6. Approximate post time is 7:06 p.m.
