California Invader Monterey Jazz
Wins Texas Mile by a Mile at LSP Grand Prairie,
Texas (April 26, 2008) - A & R Stables & Class Racing
Stable's Monterey Jazz, trained by Craig Dollase, was an authoritative
winner of the 12th running of the Grade III $300,000 Texas Mile,
for 3-year-olds and upward, on Saturday at Lone Star Park. With
Jockey David Flores in the saddle, Monterey Jazz led his five rivals
through fractions of :24.50, :47.15, and 1:10.64, before completing
the one mile mission in 1:35.25, eight lengths in front of his nearest
rival. It was the third fast Texas Mile in history and Flores' third
victory in the race. He previously won the inaugural running aboard
Isitingood in 1997 and on Dixie Dot Com in 2001.
"The plan was to just get him to the lead and cruise along,"
said winning jockey David Flores. "He was really able to relax
on the lead today and when he hit that second turn he just had another
gear. I made sure he was square in the gate and he broke well. I
didn't have to rush him to the lead, and once he got around the
first turn, I didn't want to look back."
Already a multiple graded stakes winner over turf and synthetic
surfaces, Monterey Jazz earned his first graded stakes score over
a natural dirt surface on Saturday. A winner of six of 12 starts,
Monterey Jazz earned $185,000 for winning the Texas Mile to give
him $532,740 for his career.
"We wanted to find some things out today with regard to how
he'd handle shipping and how he'd handle a dirt surface," said
part-owner Joe Masino, who was in attendance for the victory as
a representative of Class Racing Stable. "He ran a great race
and this gives us a lot of options. David is 4-for-4 aboard him
and we'll keep going back to David as long as we can."
As an odds-on favorite, Monterey Jazz paid $3.20, $2.20, $2.10,
runner-up Zanjero returned $2.80, $2.40, and Beta Capo paid $3.20
for show. Going Ballistic, Scrappy Roo, and Gold Wonder completed
the order of finish.
