City Sleeper Holds Off Lady Mallory
In Lakeway (August 16, 2003) - City Sleeper
ran the race of her life to capture Saturday night's $35,000 feature
at Retama Park. Three ticks off the track record is an eye-catching
performance, especially for a three-year-old filly.
Benefiting from a smart ride by leading jockey Jeremy Beasley,
City Sleeper sat off a torrid pace set by Salsa Real and Real Bear.
A half mile in 45.1 cooked the Cole Norman-trained Salsa Real who
spit the bit at the top of the stretch.
At the eighth-pole, Beasley swung City Sleeper to the outside
and powered past Real Bear. From out of nowhere, Lady Mallory was
flying down the middle of the racetrack. Under furious urging from
Ricky Frazier, Lady Mallory drew even with City Sleeper and missed
the winner's circle by a head bob. Real Bear was a game third.
City Sleeper got the seven panels in 1.22 & 4/5 seconds. Bucharest
set the track record and 1.22 & 1/5 back in 1995, the track's
inaugural season. Beasley was suitably impressed.
“This was a quality field, filled with a bunch of classy
late runners. We were fortunate to win. But my filly ran a big race,”
said Beasley. City Sleeper, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Carson City,
is trained by Steve Asmussen for owners Kirk and Judy Robinson.
