Cherylville Slew Gets Up to Take $50,000 Margarita Breeders' Cup at Retama Park
Selma, Texas (July 23, 2004) - Owner-trainer C. R. Trout
had to sweat a few bullets as Cherylville Slew battled down the
stretch with Mexican Moonlight and Kristina's Wish in tonight's
$50,000 Margarita Breeders' Cup Handicap at Retama Park. In the
end, the 5-year-old daughter of Evansville Slew prevailed in the
1 1/16-mile contest for fillies and mares, edging ahead late to
win by a half-length over favored Mexican Moonlight in 1:43.99 over
a firm turf course.
Under jockey Terry Stanton, Cheryville Slew settled on the inside
early but moved off the rail midway through the first turn. She
was in the middle of the pack as Mexican Moonlight and Kristina's
Wish vied for the early lead, and she advanced on the backstretch
to reach the top pair on the far turn. The three engaged in a heated
battle.
Kristina's Wish was the first to crack from the pressure, battling
into the final furlong before giving ground to the others. Cherylville
Slew slowly edged clear of a spent but game Mexican Moonlight to
secure the victory.
Kristina's Wish crossed the wire 1 1/4 lengths behind Mexican Moonlight
and one length in front of Lady Sonya. Lady Mallory, My Misty Princess,
Bonnie J., Marfa's Taxes, Madam P, Queen's Wager, and Angel of Goliad
followed past the wire.
