Cole Norman Takes Both Divisions of Texas Stallion Stakes
Selma, Texas (September 28, 2002) - Trainer Cole Norman
shipped in three horses for the two $50,000 divisions of the Texas
Stallions Stakes Saturday night at Retama Park, and his journey
from Louisiana to Texas was well worth it.
Dancing Dreams held off a fast closing Pancho's Affair to capture
the filly division and Fitzroyal rallied up the rail to overtake
Onlynurimagination to win the colts division. Fitzroyal's entry
mate, Royal Honey ran third.
Winning jockey Buck Harris, aboard Dancing Dreams said, “
Cole told me just to stay out of her way and I did.” Harris
actually rode a smart race to stay off a very hot pace and close
on the leaders as they turned for home.
Gerard Melancon, who at age 38 is “having the best year of
my career” with over 180 wins a win in the Grade One Vosberg
recently at Belmont, rode Fitzroyal to an easy two length win in
an excellent time of 1:10 and 3/5 for the six furlongs.
Weldon Cloninger suffered a broken leg when Wildess was unruly
in the gate before the fourth race. Cloninger will be out of action
for at least six weeks to three months.
