Brooks and Kearl Win Back-to-Back Editions of the $15,250 Harrisburg Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park
(August 18, 2006) - For the second year in a row, trainer
Judd Kearl and rider James Brooks scored the upset in the $15,250
Harrisburg Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park. In 2005, it was Thanks
For The Ride and tonight it was Streaking Lt, who outran his odds
of 10-1 and won the 550-yard stakes in :27.725.
The 4-year-old son of Streakin La Jolla is owned by J C Wells and
was making his third start of the 2006 Sam Houston Race Park Quarter
Horse meeting. He returned $22.20 for tonight’s victory and
finished a neck in front of Cash On Black and third place finisher,
Dash On Line.
“It was great,” said Brooks, who won four races on
the Friday night card. “He left in front and never looked
back.”
“He needed that last out,” said Wells in the winner’s
circle following the stakes. “The trainer and I weren’t
sure he was ready for this race, but the jockey kind of talked the
trainer into running. He thought he could run with them. He ran
a good race and we want to run him 870-yards. We think he can get
the distance.” The start of the race was delayed by a minute
as Talents Stony was fractious in the starting gate and had to be
reloaded. Cash On Black, who had finished first in a dead-heat in
the $45,500 TQHA “550” Stakes on July 28, finished second
tonight under rider Rodrigo Vallejo.
“It was difficult waiting in the gate,” commented
Vallejo. “But he ran well to finish second.”
Dash On Line, was sent off as the 2-1 post time favorite, but had
to settle for third.
“He ran a decent race,” said trainer, Christian Rubalcava.
“ They took a long time behind the gate, and I think that
hurt my horse some. He didn’t get away as good as he can.
Luis (Ramirez) said he was gaining ground at the end, and he thought
he ran a good race.”
Last year Thanks For The Ride paid $23.40 to win and leading trainer
Judd Kearl and James Brooks once again rewarded their fans with
payouts of $22.20, $10.80 and $6.40 across the board. Fast Rythum,
Rainbows Gol, Mr Streakaway, Magic Bac, Summertime Fly, Splendid
Sam Perry and Talents Stony completed the order of finish. Ac Delco
Spark was a late scratch.
