$129,420 TQHA Sire's Cup Futurity
Highlights Weekend Racing at SHRP
(Thursday, June 11, 2009) - Sam Houston Race Park will host
the $129,420 TQHA Sire’s Cup Futurity on Saturday, June 13.
The race will be part of an exciting day featuring 11 live Quarter
Horse races and the Inaugural Wiener Dog Races, which will feature
four trial races beginning at 3:20 p.m., with the final race at
5:40 p.m.
Trials for the TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity were run on Friday,
May 29. Ivansbay was the top qualifier in the trials, finishing
the 350-yard race in a time of :17.539. The two-year-old gelding
is heavily favored at odds of 9-5. Ivansbay is owned and trained
by Frank Cavazos and will be ridden by jockey J.R. Ramirez.
“I’m proud of what this horse has shown me in such
a short time,” commented Cavazos. “He has won two of
his three races already. We hope he can continue his winning streak
in the Sires’ Cup this weekend.”
Owner Bobby Cox and trainer John Buchanan will have two horses
in the final, the fourth fastest qualifier Perryphery (4-1) and
fifth fastest qualifier Mischka (4-1). Perryphery, a two-year-old
filly, finished third in the $225,000 Retama Park Futurity on May
15.
The remainder of the 10-horse field features Sixes Wisdom, Rhia
La Jolla, Special Pem, Six Toast, Rumba Casino, Kool Favorite and
Icy Patriot.
In addition to live Quarter Horse racing events, The Park will
host a the “Dress to Impress” Pet Costume Contest for
dogs of all breeds at 3 p.m., along with five Wiener Dog Races beginning
at 3:20 p.m. The Verizon Wireless Summer Concert Series on the Bud
Light stage will feature America and Christopher Cross at The Showgrounds
immediately following the live racing program.
