The $25,000 Governor's Cup Marathon Closes Out the SHRP American Quarter Horse Meet
(Houston, Texas - Sunday, May 14, 2011) - Five stakes were contested over the final weekend of the 2011 American Quarter Horse meet at Sam Houston Race Park. Sunday night’s feature was the running of the $25,000 Governors' Cup Marathon with a field of eight distance specialists completing at 870-yards.
Shineys Magic T crossed the wire in first, but an objection was lodged by the riders of Game Six and Takeitalloffjess for interference rounding the turn. After a 15-minute review by the stewards, Shineys Magic T was disqualified and placed sixth.
The victory went to Takeitalloffjess, owned by Jerry D. Chapman of Waco Texas. The five-year-old mare was making her seventh start at Sam Houston and had hit the board in each of her six previous efforts. Ridden by David Alvarez, who used a ground saving trip up the rail, covering 870-yards in :45.917.
“I thought she ran a really good race,” said trainer Vicki Lea McIvain.
“She was the only girl with all the boys,” added Chapman. “We’ll rest her for the next few weeks and see what’s at Retama Park.”
It was a disappointing decision for trainer Jesse Yoakum regarding Shineys Magic T.
“He was injured last year at Zia and had surgery for two chips,” said Yoakum, “The horse is just getting back to running and cleared those horses with room to spare.”
Game Six, at 40-1, was placed second, followed by Kite Flyer, DM Traffic, My Nickelodeon, Shineys Magic T, Blue Ribbon Dash and JC My Diamond Man.
This was the first stakes win for Takeitalloffjess, who paid $7.20 as the post-time favorite.
