Golly Zee and Executive Tone Win Their Divisions of the Texas Twister at Sam Houston Race Park

(Houston, Texas - Saturday, April 23, 2011) - Clean breaks and faster finishes were the order of the evening in the $15,000 Texas Twister at Sam Houston Race Park. The popular 110 yard stakes was split into two divisions and both were won by talented mares.

In the first of the two stakes, Golly Zee scorched to the wire in 0:6.872 seconds under rider Rodrigo Vallejo. The four-year-old daughter of Gol was bred in Texas by Dallas Blakely and R. P. Stuart. She is a half-sister to Jack Zee Quick, who won eight races, most notably, the 2003 Sam Houston Futurity.

Blakely, who resides in Fort Worth, co-owns the mare with Joe Allen, and was present to accept the trophy.

“I’ve never run in a 100 yard race before,” said Blakely. “It’s pretty quick. Zee Ann is a very special mare and Golly Zee is our third-generation homebred.”

Golly Zee ($9.80) is trained by Sam Houston leading conditioner, Judd Kearl. She earned a speed index of 108, an incredible feat in that she raced in a 25 mph head wind over the fast track. A Noble Jess with Jerry Lee Yoakum in the irons finished a neck behind; Glorys Patriot was third and Sought After, who won the 2009 Texas Twister, ran fourth.

The second division of the Texas Twister went to Executive Tone, trained by Juan Saucedo and owned by his father, Filimon of Elgin, Texas. This was the third win of the meet for the four-year-old daughter of Executive Menace, who won a 350-yard allowance on March 18 and returned to the winner's circle on April 8

Luis Ramirez had the mount and guided her deftly out of the starting gate and across the wire in 0:6.864. Juan Saucedo credited her maturity this year as the key to her growing win streak.

"We’re happy that she broke so well tonight," said Saucedo. "We have worked with her to get her to relax in the gate and she did everything we asked of her.”

This was the first stakes win for Executive Tone as well as the Saucedo family. She returned $9.60 as the third betting choice. RC Grimm ran second with Jose Alvarez in the irons, followed by Without Prejudice and Comin Thru, who was honored as 2010 Horse of the Meet at Sam Houston Race Park.
