Shiney's Magic T Triumphs in the $15,000 Ricoh Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park

(Houston, Texas - Friday, March 30, 2012) - Last year, Shineys Magic T was the runner-up in the $15,000 Ricoh Stakes, slipping at the start of the 550-yard feature. Tonight the Texas-bred 6-year-old had no mishaps, breaking alertly, and cruising to victory in :27.368 over a fast main track.

The Texas-bred gelding, trained by Jesse Yoakum, for owner Margaret F. White, has had an excellent record over the Sam Houston surface. The gray son of Dreams Work has won 8 of his 17 starts.

"He ran a really good race tonight," said Yoakum. "He got the lead and found another gear."

Sent off as the favorite in the five-horse stakes, Shineys Magic T paid $3.60 for the win and His A Tycoon Cowboy ran a game second for J.B. and Sherrie Morace, followed by La Esterlina, JC My Diamond Man and Windys Magic Six.

Sarah Must Sets New Track Record as Fastest Qualifier in Trials for the $180,900 Sam Houston Derby (G3)

Seven trials were run on Friday evening for the $180,900 Sam Houston Derby (G3). The third trial produced the fastest time of the evening as Sarah Must showed an explosive turn of foot and set a new track record in her victory. The 3-year-old daughter of Jet Cartel is owned by J.T. Hooten and Jesse Yoakum. Yoakum gave a leg up to his son, Jerry Lee, who guided the bay filly to victory in the 350 yard trial in :17.238 seconds, besting the record of :17.326 set by Pandorum on May 14, 2011.

Sarah Must broke her maiden last March at Sam Houston and ran 9th in the $400,000 TQHA Sale Futurity at Retama Park. This was her first start in 2012, but a bullet work last month indicated she was ready to return to action.

"We felt this filly was really good last year," said Yoakum. "She has some problems and needed surgery, but she came out firing tonight."

Trainer Cindi Keeton qualified the second fastest qualifier in the seventh trial. Charmin Chief Corona, bred and owned by Gary Kurz was clocked at :17.382. Her trial win was her third victory from six starts. The chestnut filly was ridden by  Francisco Raul Ramirez, Jr.

Sarah Must ($10.20) will return to Sam Houston Race Park for the final on Saturday, April 14. To view the ten fastest qualifiers, visit stallioneSearch.com.
