Odds-On Zoomin For Bux Speeds to New Track Record in $239,099 Retama Park Futurity
(Sunday, June 18, 2006) - Odd-On favorite Zoomin For Bux
did not disappoint in today's $239,099 Retama Park Futurity (Gr.
1), storming to a track record-setting victory by three-quarters
of a length over Angelina Ballerina. Owner/trainer Jose M. Joe Garza's
two-year-old chestnut colt stopped the timer in :17.240 for the
350 yards.
Zoomin For Bux, sent off at odds of 2-to-5, broke sharply under
jockey Martin Rubalcava and dueled with the Angelina Ballerina for
the lead throughout the contest, gradually edging clear for a comfortable
victory over the filly. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Beaukas
in third place, who was followed past the wire by Easy Separation,
Ace Mudslinger, First Smart Winner, Prospect of More, Off You Go,
and Copper Streaker.
Bred in Texas by Sue Hunt, Zoomin For Bux is a son of Shazoom and
the Jody O Toole mare Oh No Its Uh Oh. The fastest qualifier for
the Retama Park Futurity (Gr. 1), Zoomin For Bux broke his own track
record for the distance of :17.436 set in the race's trials on June
4. He earned a 116 speed index for the effort.
Zoomin For Bux completed the second half of Garza's and Rubalcava's
sweep of the Retama Park Futurity races since they had teamed to
capture the $26,930 Retama Park Futurity Consolation with Ace Back
to Zoom just two races earlier. Also sired by Shazoom, the Texas-bred
two-year-old filly battled to a neck triumph over Happy Streaker
in :17.792. Separate Class finished another head back in third in
the blanket finish, with Rosemarys Babe just a head further back.
The Retama Park Futurity (Gr. 1) topped off a great meet for Garza,
who finished as both the leading owner and the leading trainer at
the meet. As an owner, he had 10 starters and an impressive eight
winners and one third place finisher, giving him 90% in the money
percentage and earnings of $116,703. As a trainer, his trainees
had a record of from 70 starts of 15-6-7 for a 40% in the money
percentage and $148,353 in earnings.
Horse Win Ranch finished second in the owners' standings with five
wins and four seconds in 12 starts.
John Buchanan finished second in the trainers' standings with 13
wins from 44 starts, as well as five seconds and six thirds.
Among the jockeys, Jeff B. Jermanwas a handy winner over James
Norman Brooks, with 24 winners versus Brooks' 19.
