Final Weekend of Live Quarter Horse Racing at Lone Star Park Boasts Eight Stakes Worth More Than $1.4 Million

(Grand Prairie, Texas - Thursday, November 7, 2019) - The best Quarter Horse, Paint & Appaloosa and Arabian racing will be showcased this weekend, November 8 and 9, as Lone Star Park's 2019 Quarter Horse Racing Season comes to a close. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. First race post time each night is 6:05 p.m.

Friday, November 8

On the Friday race program, Race 2 is the 21st running of the $25,000 B. F. Phillips, Jr. Stakes (RG3) for Texas-bred Quarter Horses, three-year-olds & up going 400 yards. 

Next it's Arabian Racing at its finest. Races 4 and 6 are the divisional $20,000 Alliant Insurance Services Arabian Stallion Stakes (Gr. III) for three-year-olds & up going one mile on the main track. Race 4 is the filly and mare division, and Race 6 will be for colts and geldings. 

Race 8 is the 14th running of the $39,450 Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity (G1) for two-year-old Paint & Appaloosa horses going 350 yards. The field was decided by timed trials on October 26, with the fastest 10 earning a place in the futurity.

Saturday, November 9 – Closing night

On Saturday, the final day of the season, fans can pick up a free limited edition souvenir jockey bobblehead at the entrance gates while supplies last.

Lone Star Park welcomes back top Quarter Horse Racing personality Martha Claussen. She will be on hand covering the stakes action, plus she and Lone Star Park Track Handicapper Rick Lee will hold a pre-race handicapping seminar on the first level of the grandstand covering the entire 12-race card. Claussen will also conduct live post-race interviews in the winner's circle with the winning connections of each of the featured stakes races.

The stakes action kicks off with Race 8, the eighth running of the $47,612 Texas Classic Juvenile Stakes for two-year-olds at 400 yards. 

Race 9 is the inaugural running of the $30,000 Paragon Oaks for fillies and mares, three-year-olds & up, going 400 yards. This race has a special bonus. The winning owner will receive a free breeding to 2018 Texas Classic Futurity winner Flying Cowboy 123. 

Fans can get a close look at Flying Cowboy 123 as he qualified for and will be competing in Race 10, the $344,571 Texas Classic Derby (G1) for three-year-olds at 440 yards. Trials were held Friday, October 18. The fastest 10 from those trials are competing.

Finally Race 11, the premier race of the meeting and the richest horse race in Texas, is the 21st edition of the $904,631 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) for two-year-olds at 400 yards. Like the Derby, the fastest 10 from trials that were held Saturday, October 19, make up the field.

Season Leaders

The 2019 season leaders at this point are: in the jockey category, Francisco Calderon has a slight lead with 16 wins though last Saturday, but he will have to watch out for Juan Francisco Garcia, Jr. and Noe Villatoro. They are tied in second place with 13 wins each. With 24 races remaining, anything could happen. The trainer standings currently have last year's leader, Josue Ponce, on top with 11 wins, but he is only one win up on Angel Sanchez, who has 10. Rosebrook Farms LLC has the lead in the owner's category with six wins to second placed J. Fabian Hernandez, with four. The leaders will be presented on closing night.
