Golly Bret Overcomes Trouble to Win Cassels Bruczest Arabian Stakes at LSP
(Saturday, November 1, 2008) - Golly Bret, owned by Sam
A. Vasquez and trained by Elizabeth Brand, won the Second Running
of the $9,000, six-furlong Cassels Bruczest Stakes, for Texas-accredited
Arabian three-year-olds, over a fast track at Lone Star Park on
Saturday night.
Ridden by Christopher Conway, Golly Bret stumbled out of the gate
and found himself racing in last place in the field of five. The
chestnut son of Kador De Blaziet quickly regained his footing and
showed his class by producing an impressive rally to stop the timer
in 1:20.25. It was five-and-a-quarter lengths back to the Jerenesto
Torrez-trained DC West Wing in second and another two lengths back
to Aarons Destiny in third.
“I almost fell,” said winning rider Christopher Conway.
“The ground broke from under him at the start, but the colt
ran a nice race and I only had to ask him for a little bit around
the turn.”
“Chris did a really good job recovering with him after the
poor start,” said winning trainer Elizabeth Brand. “Sam
(winning owner Sam Vasquez) breeds nice horses and this is a really
nice horse.”
With the win, Golly Bret improved his record to 5 wins from 6
starts and increased his career earnings to $17,055 with the $5,400
winner’s share.
Golly Bret paid $2.40, $2.60, $2.10, runner-up DC West Wing returned
$2.80, $2.60, and Aarons Destiny paid $2.40 for show. NC Galloping
Gus and WMA Rushing Wind completed the order of finish.
