Eye Caughtcha Peekin Overcomes Rough Start to Win $20,000 Kool Kue Baby Handicap by a Neck
(Friday, October 10, 2008) - Randy Fagan’s Eye Caughtcha
Peekin, trained by C. Dwayne Gilbreath and ridden by Jose Amodor
Alvarez, overcame bumping at the start to win by a neck in the 10th
running of the $20,000 Kool Kue Baby Handicap for fillies and mares,
three years old and up, at Lone Star Park on Friday night.
After the rough start, Eye Caughtcha Peekin overtook leader Eyesa
Jumpn, then held off the strong finish of that rival to cover the
three hundred and fifty yards in 17.694, earning a speed index of
95. Eyesa Country Miss finished third, three-quarters-of-a-length
behind the runner up.
“We had her laid off for quite a while, but she had a great
workout here about three weeks ago, just awesome, and she ran a
big race here tonight,” said winning trainer Dwayne Gilbreath.
“That Eyesa Country Miss is a tough little old mare. She usually
gets away from there smoking. Sometimes we get her caught and sometimes
we can’t.”
“She was quick out of the gate and she finished really strong,”
added winning jockey Jose Alvarez.
With the win, Eye Caughtcha Peekin improved her lifetime record
to nine wins from 19 starts and the $11,000 winner’s share
increased her career earnings to $176,827.
Eye Caughtcha Peekin paid $10.80, $4.80 and $3.40, runner up Eyesa
Jumpn returned $4.20 and $3.40, and Eyesa Country Miss paid $3.80
to show. Bridled Lightnin, Anna Pavlova, Miss Shivers, Megas Way,
Very Dashin 123, Callies First Effort and Truly Finishes First completed
the order of finish.
