Jody Pops Zoomer Looms Tough in Grade 1, $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap Saturday at Lone Star Park

(Grand Prairie, Texas - Friday, October 3, 2014) - Ten races are carded at Lone Star Park Saturday, October 4, and it is going to be an exciting night! Three stakes are on tap, featuring the 18th running of the Grade 1, $75,000-guaranteed Refrigerator Handicap for three-year-olds and up going 440 yards. The under card is highlighted by the fifth running of the Red Cell Distance Challenge for three-year-olds and up going 870 yards, and the fifth Running of the Merial Distaff Challenge for fillies & mares, three-year-olds and up going 400 yards. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. First race is 6:35 p.m.

Jody Pops Zoomer, winner of the 2013 Texas Classic Derby, is seeking the winners circle again at Lone Star Park. It was last year when the four-year-old gelding by Zoomin for Bux out of Jody Pops Little Sis, by Jody O Toole celebrated his Derby win here at the Grand Prairie track, a track he likes. His record here is 5-3-1-0. In fact the majority of his career earnings of $284,218 were earned here ($208,900).

Trained by Toby Keeton for owners Raymundo Medrano & Sammy Valeriano of Odessa, Texas Jody Pops Zoomer has won two grade 3 stakes this year, the Higheasterjet Handicap in June, and the Mr. Jet Moore Handicap in August, both at Ruidoso Downs. His last attempt was in the Grade 3, All American Gold Cup Handicap where he stumbled at the start, was bumped, and lost all chance, finishing eighth.

Jody Pops Zoomer will have to bring his A-game though because Pure D Spit is on a roll. The six-year-old gelding by Spit Curl Jess out of Pure Princess, by Pure D Dash is a perfect six-for-six this year. Owned and trained by Rodrigo Covarrubias, Pure D Spit's most recent win was the Grade 3 Keokuk Stakes at Prairie Meadows in August. He has added $108,096 so far this year giving him a career total of $215,452.

And consider Sparrow Contender. The five-year-old horse by Contend out of Taint Special, by Streaking Six just won the Nevill Stakes here on opening night of the meet two weeks ago.

The Refrigerator Handicap is race nine on the card and is scheduled for 10:03 p.m.

Red Cell Distance Challenge Highlights Undercard Saturday

Ec Cartel owned by Alejandra Carrion and trained by Judd Kearl has been installed as the lukewarm 5-2 morning-line favorite in the fifth running of the Red Cell Distance Challenge for three-year-olds and upward at 870 yards Saturday.

A five-year-old gelding by Tinys First Corona out of Twayna Too, by Zevi, Rc Cartel has won three of 12 starts, earning $29,240. All three career wins have been here at the Grand Prairie track. Regular rider Francisco Calderon has the call.

The Red Cell Distance Challenge is the seventh race Saturday. Post time is 9:11 p.m.

Flyin High Secret Given Slight Favoritism in Merial Distaff Challenge

Juan Carlos Meza's Flyin High Secret, trained by Mary Meza, has been given slight favoritism (3-1) by Lone Star Park's odds maker, Rick Lee, in Saturday's fifth renewal of the Merial Distaff Challenge for fillies & mares, three-year-olds & up going 400 yards Saturday.

Flyin High Secret is a four-year-old daughter by No Secrets Here out of Jury Selection, by Jody O Toole. She has two wins from 15 career starts and earnings of $21,415. She won her most recent, a starter allowance here on September 20.

Post time for the Merial Distaff Challenge, the eighth race on the card is 9:37 p.m.
