Ten Two-Year-Olds Vie for Their Share of $425,565 in Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity Saturday Night at Lone Star Park
(Grand Prairie, Texas - Friday, September 28, 2012) - So closely matched, it could be a toss up for which will take home the winner's share in the 15th Running of the Grade 1, $473,300 Dash for Cash Futurity, for two-year-olds going 400 yards at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie this Saturday night.
Trainer Eddie Willis will have the slight edge as two of his trainees, Captain Strawfly and Rc Tres Times Seis qualified two weeks ago in the trial heats on Saturday, September 15. The pair will run as a coupled entry in the red and white colors of their owner, Joe M. Flores. Then there is the threat of Prince Vallyant, owned and trained by Russell Harris, who gave a dazzling performance posting the fastest time in the last trial heat of the night. Another to watch is One Handsome Man. Trained by Ralph Muniz, the colt by One Famous Eagle has been made lukewarm morning line favorite at 5-2. He also has drawn the outside post, a good place to get a clean break and avoid a troubled trip. And with speed being the all-important factor, how could one not consider Apollo Ono? Owned and trained by Alfredo Gomez, the Gelded son of Thoroughbred sire Apollo at 4-1, will be piloted by world-champion jockey
G. R. Carter, Jr.
The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds listed in parenthesis, consists of: Captain Strawfly (Jimmy Dean Brooks, 3-1); Rc Tres Times Seis (Roy D. Brooks, 3-1); Prince Vallyant (Larry D. Payne, 6-1); First Down Shazoom (Alex Baldillez, Jr., 8-1); Apollo Ono (G. R. Carter, Jr., 4-1); Jody Pops Zoomer (Luis L. Vivanco, 12-1); The August Heat (Esgar Ramirez, 12-1); Fdd Going Grand (Danny J. Lavergne, 15-1); Send a Candy Guy (Tony Ray Bennett, 12-1) and One Handsome Man (Oscar Rincon, 5-2).
Scheduled as race eight on the nine-race program, the Grade 1, $425,565 Dash for Cash Futurity has an approximate post time of 9:23 p.m. (CT).
Fastest Qualifier Jess Lips 7-5 Morning Line Favorite in Grade 2, $174,000 Dash For Cash Derby
When Jess Lips finished third by a mere neck behind all-time leading money earner in American Quarter Horse Racing history, Ochoa in the Rainbow Derby last July, he proved his own self worth in the sport. Given heavy favoritism of 7-5 in the morning line by Lone Star Park track handicapper, Rick Lee, the three-year-old colt by Mr Jess Perry looks tough in Saturday nights 15th running of the Grade 2, $174,000 Dash for Cash Derby for three-year-olds going 440 yards. His performance in his derby trial Friday, September 14, was quite impressive. Stopping the teletimer at :21.215 he earned a speed index of 105, the highest of the meet to date.
Breaking from the outside post, this years Retama Park Derby winner, Jess Fly With Me could be a close contender. The Eusevio Huitron trained son of Fly Jess Fly has won five of eight starts so far this year with earnings of $81,354 for his efforts.
The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds listed in parenthesis is: Lethal Volt (Ricky Ramirez, 12-1); Chicks Smart Money (Cody Jensen, 6-1); Wahoo (Esgar Ramirez, 20-1); Windham (John Hamilton, 15-1); Jess Lips (Jimmy Dean Brooks, 7-5); Charmin Chief Corona (Luis L. Vivanco, 15-1); Tw Special Feature (Roy Baldillez, 20-1); Fast Prize Mike (Jarrod Deschamp, 15-1); Sweet Oblivion (Jose Amador Alvarez, 9-2) and Jess Fly With Me (Santos Carrizales, 5-1).
Scheduled as race seven on the nine-race program, the Grade 2, $174,000 Dash for Cash Derby has an approximate post time of 8:59 p.m. (CT).
Ninth Running of the Dash For Cash Juvenile Stakes
Merle & Joe Kirk Fulton's Tayte Me Down, trained by Mike Robbins, has been made 3-1 morning line favorite in the $47,285 Dash for Cash Juvenile Stakes Saturday night. The two-year-old filly by Special Leader was second by a half-length to Futurity qualifier, Captain Strawfly.
TQHA Sales Futurity winner Ss Poker Face Dream if back to top form will be tough in this spot. The colt by Primetime Dream was a perfect four-for-four with the futurity win last June at Retama. Being bumped hard in a trial race at Ruidoso cost him in his second race back. Look for improvement.
The Dash for Cash Juvenile Stakes is the scheduled sixth with an approximate post time of 8:35 p.m. (CT).
The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds listed in parenthesis is: First Flyn Dash (Ricky Ramirez, 10-1); Captain Debut (Larry D. Payne, 8-1); Oilwagon (Cody Jensen, 8-1); Ss Poker Face Dream (Carlos Salas Castro, 4-1); Macho Maggie (Alfonso Lujan, 12-1); Sheaintcrynrealtears (Jerry Lee Yoakum, 5-1); Flirtingwithamiracle (Eleazar Rivera Hernandez, 10-1); Solid Rocky Top (Russel Hadley, 12-1); Classic Patriot (John Hamilton, 15-1) and Tayte Me Down (Jose Amador Alvarez, 3-1).
