Three Stakes Saturday at LSP Topped by 17th Running of the $75,000-Guaranteed Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap

(Grand Prairie, Texas - Friday, September 27, 2013) - Three stakes races are carded at Lone Star Park Saturday, September 28. The main feature is the 17th running of the Grade 1, $75,000-guaranteed Refrigerator Handicap, for three-year-olds and up going 440 yards. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. First live race is at 6:35 p.m.

The race is named after World Champion Racing Quarter Horse Refrigerator, who was the first American Quarter Horse to surpass $2 million in career earnings. In six racing campaigns, the gelding won 22 of 36 races, including 11 stakes events. In addition to capturing the 1990 All American Futurity, Refrigerator is the only horse to capture three runnings of the prestigious Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos. He was named the AQHA’s Champion 2-Year-Old & 2-Year-Old Gelding in 1990; Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding in 1991; World Champion, Champion Aged Horse & Gelding in 1992 and '93, and Champion Aged Gelding in 1994. Owned by Jim Helzer and trained by Blane Schvaneveldt in California and C. Dwayne "Sleepy" Gilbreath in New Mexico and Oklahoma, Refrigerator was inducted into Quarter Horse racing’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

The Refrigerator has drawn a field of eight accomplished contenders. Feature Mr Bojangles, Champion 2-year-old colt in 2011 and winner of the Grade 1, Rainbow Futurity has been winless in his past eight attempts, but could out class the rest. Owned by R. D. Hubbard and Heysol Howlet and trained by Sleepy Gilbreath, the 4-year-old son of Feature Mr Jess has career earnings of $686,324 from a record of 16-7-3-2. He will be ridden by 10 time AQHA World Champion Jockey and all-time leading money earner in Quarter Horse Racing, G. R. Carter, Jr.

Last year's winner of the Refrigerator, Charal Kid, will attempt to become the first horse to win the Grade 1 race twice. The 7-year-old gelding by Streakin La Jolla has career earnings of $504,119 from 18 wins from 49 starts.

The lone female horse in the race, Loves Brown Sugar is currently on a five-win streak. The last three were stakes wins at Retama Park. Can she continue that streak against the boys?

The field for the Refrigerator from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds listed in parentheses, consists of: Charal Kid (Manuel Gutierrez, 4-1); Loves Brown Sugar (Cesar Zuniga, 7-2); A Toss Up (Jimmy Dean Brooks, 10-1); Joker On Jack -(Raul Gutierrez, 3-1); Bar Struck (Jose Amador Alvarez, 15-1); Lota Pyc (Roy Baldillez, 8-1); Feature Mr Bojangles (G. R. Carter, Jr., 5-2) and Jess Fly With Me (Luis L. Vivanco., 20-1).

The Refrigerator Handicap is the sixth of nine races Saturday at Lone Star Park. The $30,000-added Red Cell Distance Challenge, for 3-year-olds & up at 870 yards is the third race on the card with the $30,000-added Merial Distaff Challenge, for fillies & mares, 3-year-olds & up at 400 yards, slotted as the eighth race.
