Jack Zee Quick is Fastest Qualifier
in Trials for the $300,000 Sam Houston Futurity (Friday,
August 22, 2003) - Jack Zee Quick was nimble and probably could
have jumped over a candle stick as he was the fastest qualifier
in trials run this evening at Sam Houston Race Park for the $300,000
Sam Houston Futurity (G1).
Trained by Ronald Gilmer, the 2-year-old son of Royal Quick Dash
was making his first start at Sam Houston Race Park. Bred and owned
by Dallas Blakely and R.P. Stuart, he had run first or second in
his last three races at Delta Downs, including a second place finish
in the $180,100 Firecracker Futurity on June 28. With rider Nickey
Laws aboard, Jack Zee Quick won impressively in gate-to-wire fashion,
completing the 400-yard trial in a time of :19.956.
"He’s a racehorse," commented Gilmer. "We
thought we were going to win the Firecracker at Delta. He went off
as the favorite over there. He got outrun by that mare (First Kool
Baby). She made as perfect a break as I’ve ever seen and he
just couldn’t catch her. He’s the kind you dream about;
he’s for real."
The final time was the fastest in recent history as the 2002 Sam
Houston Futurity fastest qualifier, MJ Gold covered 400 yards in
a time of :20.002. The eventual winner of last year’s final,
Shiney Sign, crossed the wire of the 400-yard stakes in a time of
:19.968.
Blakely and Stuart are no strangers to the winner’s circle
as they also own Redgaf, winner of the $23,760 Professional’s
Choice Texas Challenge on July 20. He will represent Texas in the
$75,000 Professional’s Choice Challenge Championship at Los
Alamitos on November 1.
No Fees, the diminutive gray filly, owned by Bobby Cox and John
Buchanan, kept her winning streak intact as she won her trial in
a time of :20.217.
The was the winner of the $253,050 TQHA Sales Futurity (RG1) on
July 12 and is now five-for five. Buchanan qualified three additional
runners for the final; Ima Perry Girl, Graford and Abominable.
Live racing at Sam Houston Race Park continues on Saturday, August
23 with ten races including three trials for the $98,000 Sam Houston
Derby. The finals of the Sam Houston Derby as well as the $300,000
Sam Houston Futurity will be run on closing night of the 2003 American
Quarter Horse meeting, Saturday, September 6. The complete list
