Azoom is the Fastest Qualifier
for the $1 Million Texas Classic Futurity at SHRP
Houston, Texas (October 15, 2004) - Eleven trials were run this
evening at Sam Houston Race Park for the $1,000,000 Texas Classic
Futurity (G1). The amazingly talented Azoom, who was the fastest
qualifier in the TQHA Sires' Futurity, the TQHA Sale Futurity and
the Sam Houston Futurity, did it again tonight, winning his 400-yard
trial in a time of :19.865.
The 2-year-old colt, bred in Texas by Jerry Windham, was purchased
at the 2003 TQHA Yearling Sale for $62,000 by Enrique Carrion of
Veracruz, Mexico. He began his career in Mexico, breaking his maiden
on March 12 and winning four races in Mexico City before Carrion
sent him to trainer Frank Cavazos at Sam Houston Race Park on May
22. With regular rider, Rodrigo Vallejo, Azoom has captured two
Grade 1 futurities at Sam Houston Race Park, $283,422 TQHA Sale
Futurity (RG1) on August 14 and the $350,000 Sam Houston Futurity
(G1) on September 24. He not only won that stakes in convincing
fashion, he set a new track record of :19.574 for the distance of
400-yards.
The previous record of :19.59 was set by Mr Bar Code on September
9, 2000 in his win in the 2000 Sam Houston Futurity.
Azoom has now won 10 of his 12 lifetime starts, six of them at
Sam Houston Race Park. Cavazos continues to be amazed at the talent
of his Texas-bred colt.
"He's just a freak, I guess," said Cavazos. "There's
not many colts out there that can run that fast. Rodrigo tells me
that he has never really asked him to run. He's never really had
to push him. We just want to keep him sound and look forward to
running him in the finals."
Bigtime Favorite, trained by John Buchanan was the second fastest
qualifier, in a repeat of the trial results for the Sam Houston
Futurity. Under Juan Vazquez, Bigtime Favorite won his trial in
:19.978 and they were the only two runners in the 11 trial races
to break the twenty-second mark.
"He's a good horse," acknowledged Buchanan. "He's
getting more experienced and as long as they keep Azoom (away) and
load him up and take him to another track, we'd probably do good."
Azoom will take on his nine rivals on Friday, October 29. He is
also qualified for the $150,000 Ford Juvenile Challenge on MBNA
America Challenge Championships night at Sam Houston Race Park on
Saturday, November 6.
Cavazos has not ruled out the colt returning on one-week's rest,
but will reserve the final decision following Azoom's post-race
condition in the Texas Classic Futurity.
