Upcoming Retama Park Meet To Offers Horsemen
Expanded Racing Opportunities
Retama Park's Spring Meet begins on Friday, April 13 and will continue
through Monday, June 25. Post time for Fridays and Saturdays is 6:45 p.m.
and on Sundays and special events racing will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Ten Quarter Horse races will be carded every Friday, Saturday and Sunday
for a total 340 Quarter Horse races. The total number of races represents
a 15% increase over 2000's total of 296 races. Retama Park will distribute
a total of $353,500 in stakes purses over the 19 scheduled stakes races.
Total purse distribution is estimated to increase from $1,418,000 to $1,499,000,
an $80,000 increase. Additionally, total overnight purses, including stakes
purses and added money, is estimated at $60,000 per night for 2001.
Retama Park's Spring Meet will also include four nights of live Thoroughbred
Racing. On several Mondays in May and June, Retama Park will offer a full
card of Thoroughbred racing beginning at 6:45 PM. They will card 12 races
per night on those nights. Those dates will be May 7, May 21, June 4 and
June 18.
According to Retama Park Racing Secretary Mike Shamburg, "The horsemen
we've talked to are happy with the increased number of racing opportunities."
Retama will also host "Road To The Triple Crown" parties on
April 7 and April 14. The former will include the simulcast of the Santa
Anita Derby (Gr. I) from Santa Anita in California, with a field expected
to include current Kentucky Derby (Gr. I) favorite Point Given. The April
14 party will feature simulcasts of the Wood Memorial Stakes (Gr. I) from
Aqueduct in New York, the Blue Grass Stakes (Gr. II) from Keeneland in
Kentucky and the Arkansas Derby (Gr. II) from Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.
