Retama Park's 2008 Thoroughbred Meet
Opens Friday, August 29 Retama Park near San Antonio kicks
off its 2008 Thoroughbred meet on Friday, August 29, with 35 days of live
racing on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Saturday, November
15. Post time will be 6:45 p.m. each day with the exceptions of Friday,
October 24 and Saturday, October 25 to accommodate simulcasting the running
of the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. Post time
on Saturday, October 25 will be 5:00 p.m., and post time on Friday, October
24 has not yet been determined.
Topping the stakes schedule are the traditional rich turf stakes for
two-year-olds - the $100,000-guaranteed SKYY El Joven Stakes for colts
and geldings and the $100,000-guaranteed M2 Technology La Senorita Stakes
for fillies, both going one mile on the grass on Saturday, November 1.
The other traditionally biggest night of the meet, Texas Horse Racing
Hall of Fame Night, will be held on Saturday, October 4. The evening will
include the 2008 Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Induction Gala and Ceremony,
as well as six Thoroughbred stakes
races and one Arabian stakes race.
Topping the list of races for the night are the $100,000-guaranteed
Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Stakes for Texas-breds,
three and up, going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, as well as the $125,000-guaranteed
My Dandy Texas Stallion Stakes and the $125,000-guaranteed Darby’s
Daughter Texas Stallion Stakes, both at six furlongs for Texas-bred two-year-old
colts and geldings or fillies, respectively. Total purses for the evening
will exceed $500,000.
Back for the meet are Retama’s 50 Cent Nights, a popular promotional
event that has routinely resulted in drawing sizeable crowds to the track.
This season’s 50 Cent Nights are scheduled for: Sat., Aug, 30, Sat.,
Sept. 6, Sat., Sept. 13, Sat., Sept. 20, Sat., Sept. 27, Sat., Oct. 4,
Sat., Oct. 18, Sat., Nov. 1, Sat., Nov. 8, Fri., Nov. 14, and Sat., Nov.
15. Retama’s 50 Cent Nights
feature free admission, 50 cent programs, 50 cent sodas, $1 draft beer,
$1 hot dogs, and free kids activities.
General admission is $2.50 for adults, with clubhouse admission an additional
$1.00 and clubhouse reserved seats an additional $3.00. Grandstand box
seats are $8.00 daily ($2.00 per seat, two seat minimum), and clubhouse
box seats (including air conditioning and a TV monitor) are $20.00 daily
($5.00 per seat, two seat minimum, but $10.00 per seat on Breeders’
Cup Day.
