Retama Park Meet Opens with Large Fields, Wagering Exceeding Projections (Selma,
Texas - September 7, 2010) - Retama Park opened its 2010 Thoroughbred
meet on Friday, September 3 to full fields and wagering that exceded the
track's projections. The eight-week meet will feature live racing every
Friday and Saturday night through October 23, with a first post time of
6:45 p.m. each night. Races will also be shown on TVG.
A total of 92 horses were entered for the nine-race opening night card
conducted on Friday, September 3. Saturday's nine-race card drew 99 entries,
and 102 horses were entered to run in the nine races this coming Friday,
September 10.
According to Retama Racing Secretary James Leatherman, "It was gratifying
to see the horsemen enter so many horses."
The meet will feature an $80,000 per night purse structure and be highlighted
by the $75,000 El Joven Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings and
the $75,000 M2 Technology La Senorita Stakes for two-year-old fillies
on October 23 and two divisions of the $100,000 Texas Stallion Stakes
for two-year-olds on September 25.
Every Saturday night of the meet will feature Retama's popular 50 Cent
Saturday, which includes free admission for everyone, dramatically reduced
concesssion prices, and great free activities like pony rides, a petting
zoo, face painters, and clowns.
Retama Park CEO Bryan Brown told the Daily Racing Form, "We just
can't say how pleased we are some of the top trainers in the state are
going to be here and have the confidence in us to bring their horses.
We're happy that even though it's a such a short meet, they made the decision
to come to Retama. It's going to be a quick but fun meet that I think
people will enjoy. Half of our nights are going to be our family nights."
In addition to the 50 Cent Saturdays, the meet will feature reduced 12
percent takeout on both pick threes and doubles.
