Special Events Aplenty During Lone Star's
10th Spring Thoroughbred Season There's a lot more than just
horse racing on tap this year at Lone Star Park. A trio of marquee post-race
concerts, two exciting prize-finding missions and a sleek golf-sized umbrella
giveaway highlight Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie's promotional schedule
for the 10th annual Spring Thoroughbred Season.
The 66-day meeting, which opens Thursday, April 13 and continues through
Sunday, July 23, also will feature the return of the bargain-friendly
Dollar Day, two nights of post-race holiday fireworks and live music in
the outdoor Courtyard of Champions area most every Friday night and Saturday
afternoon during the races.
The special events start fast with back-to-back concerts after the races
on opening weekend. Fast-rising country music star Chris Cagle will perform
Friday, April 14, and sensational Grammy Award-winner Lee Ann Womack (with
special guests Jason Boland & The Stragglers as the opening act) take
center stage on Saturday, April 15. Later in the season, another top act
will be announced to perform after the races on Friday, June 16.
There'll be fun for the entire family on Easter Sunday, April 16, as
Lone Star Park stages a mammoth Easter Egg Hunt for children age 10 and
under. A total of 30,000 Easter Eggs will cover Lone Star Park's grassy
area near the top of the stretch where three age groups - ages 5 and under,
ages 6-8 and ages 9-10 (10,000 eggs for each division) - will hunt for
eggs filled with candy, toys and Six Flags Over Texas tickets. To top
it off, two eggs in each division will include the grand prize - an iPod
Shuffle. In addition to the hunt, there'll be bounce houses, balloon animals,
games, live music and appearances by the Easter Bunny, Tommy Pickles and
Angelica of the Rugrats and clowns.
Moms will get their turn to hunt for a prize in the Mother's Day Diamond
Dig on Sunday, May 14. Thanks to Van Peterson Jewelers in Irving, Texas,
the first 500 women (age 21 and over) through admission gates that day
will get a chance to dig for a diamond on the main track. The diamond
is valued at $2,500, and the winner will also receive at $500 gift certificate
to the jewelry store.
The featured promotional giveaway at the meeting will be a Lone Star
Park Umbrella on Lone Star Million Day, which will be staged on Memorial
Day, Monday, May 29. Each fan with a paid admission will receive a free,
forest green, golf-sized umbrella while supplies last. Also to be given
away this season will be Lone Star Park Magnetic Schedules, courtesy of
Budweiser, on opening weekend: Saturday, April 15 and Sunday, April 16.
Dollar Day, inaugurated in 2004, returns Saturday, April 29. The promotion
coincides with the 10th running of the Grade III, $300,000 Texas Mile
- one of Lone Star's signature races - and features beer, soft drinks,
hot dogs, popcorn, general admission, general parking and programs for
just $1 each.
A second night of fireworks has been reinstated for the Fourth of July
holiday weekend. Special 5 p.m. matinee racing programs will take place
on Sunday, July 2 and Monday, July 3 with some of the most spectacular
fireworks shows in North Texas to follow live racing at approximately
10 p.m. The Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration also will feature
live music, plenty of bounce houses and games, numerous vendor booths
and fun for the entire family such as pony rides and a petting zoo.
Other daylong celebrations this season coincide with simulcasts of horse
racing's Triple Crown events. Kentucky Derby Day on Saturday, May 6 will
double as a Cinco de Mayo Celebration, courtesy of Jose Cuervo. Jose Cuervo
also will present Margarita Madness on Preakness Stakes Day, Saturday,
May 20. Both days will feature live music, the Robo Surfer (a beach bum's
version of the mechanical bull) and margaritas in the Courtyard of Champions.
Belmont Stakes Day on Saturday, June 10 will showcase the Crown Royal
Craze in the Courtyard with specialty drinks and live music.
Live music will be performed between races on 34 of Lone Star's 66 racing
dates. Party at the Park returns every Friday (except June 16 and a special
Saturday, June 24 date) from 7-11 p.m. in the Courtyard with concerts
and $1.75 beer specials. There'll also be six Budweiser "True Music"
Saturdays from 12-4 p.m. (April 22, May 13, May 27, June 3, June 17 and
July 15).
Senior Citizens' Day will take place every Sunday (except July 2) where
people age 62 and over will be admitted free of charge with proof of identification.
Customers who redeem a can of Dr Pepper to Lone Star Park's Grandstand
entrances during the Dr Pepper Can Months of May and June will receive
$1 general admission, a free Dr Pepper and an entry to win a day at the
races in one of Lone Star Park's luxurious penthouse suites.
