Illegal Memories Voted Lone Star Park's 2007 Fall Meeting of Champions Horse of the Meeting

Illegal Memories, the winner of Saturday's Grade 1, $1,069,297 Texas Classic Futurity, was voted Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie's Horse of the Meeting and Champion 2-Year-Old Male for the recently concluded 2007 Fall Meeting of Champions for American Quarter Horses.

The Texas-bred gelded son of Illegal Runaway out of the Leaving Memories mare Good Ole Memories became the fourth 2-year-old to be named Horse of the Meeting, joining OV Jet (1999), Eyesa Special (2000) and PYC Paint Your Wagon (2005).

Other seasonal champions were Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap winner Mr Chivato to You (Older Male); Refrigerator runner-up Bullions N Garters (Older Female); Lone Star Park Distance Championship winner First to Ramble (Distance Horse); Texas Classic Derby third and Dash For Cash Derby eighth Hiclass La Jolla (3-Year-Old Male); Texas Classic Derby winner Reba Cleata (3-Year-Old Female); Dash For Cash Juvenile Stakes winner and Texas Classic Futurity seventh Eyesa Jumpn (2-Year-Old Female); and 13-year-old gelding A Glint of Gold (Claiming Horse), who went unbeaten in three starts in low level claiming races.

Illegal Memories, a $5,500 purchase by owners Tim Lange and Charlie Forbes, is trained by Doug McMullen and was ridden this meeting by Roy Baldillez.

In addition to his neck victory over Pool and Red Storm Cat in the Texas Classic, Illegal Memories finished second to Rock Solid Jess in the Grade 1, $432,090 Dash For Cash Futurity. He ran fast, too, stopping the teletimer in :19.645 in the Texas Classic (the fourth fastest in 15 editions of the race) and recording the fastest times in trials to both futurities.

As a result, Lange and Forbes ($555,906), McMullen ($597,924) and Baldillez ($690,774) led their respective categories in money-won at the Lone Star meeting. Lange and Forbes' lofty total eclipsed the Lone Star fall record of $482,867 set by the partnership of H. and M. Brown, Homer "Bud" Hill and Terry Bell in 2006.

"Diamond" Jim Brooks, at age 56, won seven races on closing week to collect his third straight Lone Star Park riding title with 32 winners, two more than runner-up Arturo Puga, and five clear of Rodrigo Vallejo in third.

Judd Kearl beat Bobby Touchet by three, 24-21, for his second consecutive training title. His two-dozen victories was the third-highest win total in Fall Meeting of Champions history and the most since the late Steve Van Bebber's record 36 in 2000. Last year, Kearl shared the crown with John Buchanan. McMullen, who finished third but led all trainers in money won, also topped the training colony with a lofty 48.4% win-clip (15 wins from 31 starters).

For the third straight year, A.D. Maddox, who runs his horses with trainer James Gerhards, topped all owners in races won with eight trips to the winner's circle. C. Lynn Anderson Jr. and Touchet were second with five wins apiece.

Live racing returns to Lone Star Park in 2008 with a 65-date Spring Thoroughbred Season that will cover 16 weeks from April 10-July 27. The 31-date Fall Meeting of Champions will be held over 10 weeks from Sept. 26-Nov. 29.

Next year's fall schedule will be slightly different than this year's meeting. Instead of running Wednesday-Saturday, the 2008 season will open one week earlier than usual and feature Thursday-Saturday racing in October and a Wednesday-Saturday schedule in November.

Until then, simulcast wagering will continue daily in Lone Star's Post Time Pavilion (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).
