Texas Classic Futurity Winner Mr Queens
Mystery Crowned 2008 Fall Horse of the Meeting at LSP Mr.
Queens Mystery, winner of Saturday’s Grade 1, $1,154,802 Texas Classic
Futurity, was named Lone Star Park’s Horse of the Meeting and Champion
2-Year-Old Male for the recently concluded 2008 Fall Meeting of Champions.
The two-year-old son of Shazoom out of the First Place Dash mare First
Place Queen became the fifth 2-year-old to be crowned Horse of the Meeting,
joining OV Jet (1999), Eyesa Special (2000), PYC Paint Your Wagon (2005)
and last year’s winner Illegal Memories.
Other seasonal champions for 2008 were – Grade 1 Refrigerator
Handicap winner Diamond Tres Seis (Older Male); Kool Kue Baby Handicap
victor Eye Caughtcha Peekin (Older Female); Lone Star Park Distance Championship
winner Vital Winner (Distance Horse); Grade 1 Texas Classic Derby champ
Dmnv Mountable (3-Year-Old Male); Restricted Grade 3 Classic Chevrolet
Heartbeat of America Handicap winner and last year’s Champion 2-Year-Old
Female Eyesa Jumpn (3-Year-Old Female); Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity
runner up Lethal Delight (2-Year-Old Female); and 3-year-old filly Eye
Zoom Too (Claiming Horse), who was three for five, with two wins and two
seconds in four claiming races, during the meet.
Azoom LP’s Mr Queens Mystery, is trained by Lone Star Park’s
second leading trainer in wins (19) Robert Touchet and was ridden in his
Texas Classic Futurity victory by Rodrigo Vallejo. During the meet, Mr
Queens went three for three starting on Oct. 31 when he notched his first
career victory in a $6,000 maiden claimer. He followed that up with the
second fastest qualifying time (19.686 seconds) in winning his Futurity
trial before capturing the Futurity on Nov. 29.
As a result of that win, his rider Vallejo was the leading money-earning
jockey at the meet with $721,447. In addition, his owners Azoom LP led
all owners in winnings with $528,927, the second highest total ever behind
Tim Lange and Charlie Forbes’ record total ($555,906) last year,
and his trainer Touchet was runner up to Heath Taylor in trainer earnings
with $596,240.
Ricky Ramirez was the meet’s leading rider in wins with 39, 12
more than runner up Vallejo’s 27. Russel Hadley and Luis Ramirez
were tied for third with 22 each.
Trainer Heath Taylor (23) also outpaced Robert Touchet (19) by four
wins to take the trainer’s title. Trey Wood was third with 13 trips
to the winner’s circle.
For the fourth straight year, A.D. Maddux, whose horses are trained
by James Gerhards, claimed the owner’s crown with nine victories.
Maddux clinched the title by winning the first race of the meet’s
final night. Bennard & Barbara Rowland and C. Lynn Anderson finished
tied for second with six wins apiece.
Live racing returns to Lone Star Park in 2009 with 96 live racing dates.
The 65-date Spring Thoroughbred Season will cover 16 weeks from April
9 - July 26, 2009 while a 31-day Fall Meeting of Champions for American
Quarter Horses will be run over 10 weeks from Sept. 25 - Nov. 28, 2009.
