Longtime Texas Horseman Jack Dube Passes Away, Funeral to Be Tuesday, October 10

Longtime Texas horsemen and trainer Jack W. Dube passed away Sunday morning, October 08, 2006 after a courageous five month battle with liver cancer. He was 64 years old.

Born on, February 21, 1942, Jack is survived by his wife Peggy of Giddings; his daughters, Tammy Dube Key of Ledbetter, Texas and Jackie Dube of Giddings, Texas; and one grandson, Riley Key of Ledbetter, Texas.

Over the course of his life, Jack started thousands of Quarter Horses and many Paint Horses in races. When pari-mutuel horse racing came to Texas in 1989, Jack was one of the very first in line to be licensed as a trainer at G. Rollie White Downs in Brady, Texas. Over many years, Jack set and broke many track records too numerous to list. Jack and Peggy decided to close their racing stables in 2005 and concentrate on their family farm and training horses for their daughters and family.

Among Jack's many accomplishments was a win with Dealin Easy in the 1983 Kansas Derby (G2) (now known as the Ruidoso Derby) for the owners Jack and Linda Fletcher, with Steve Harris in the irons. The very next year, Jack teamed up with jockey Jacky Martin to capture the Kansas Futurity (G1) (now known as the Ruidoso Futurity) with Flying Arky for owners Willie and Dee Talley. In 1985, Dube and Jacky Martin again partnered to win the Rainbow Futurity (G1) with Brigand Silk for Wichita Land & Cattle Company.

As a young man, Jack competed in rodeos and rode as a jockey. In addition to his own competitive achievements, Dube was always a huge fan and supporter of Peggy, Tammy, Jackie, Riley and all his family members’ rodeo careers.

Known for his excellent horsemanship, spunk, and quit wit, Jack will forever be remembered by the many horsemen who were graced with the opportunity to cross paths with such a naturally talented horseman. He will be dearly missed.

The horse racing industry’s thoughts and prayers go out to the Dube family in this time of sorrow.
