October 22: Six Breeders' Cup Horses
to Work at Lone Star on Saturday (October 22, 2004)-
Six of the 13 probable starters stabled at Lone Star Park this week
will work Saturday in anticipation of the Breeders’ Cup World
Thoroughbred Championships at Lone Star Park one week later on Oct.
30. Roses in May, Kitten’s Joy, Dynever, Magistretti, Wonder
Again and Culinary are all scheduled for their final serious drills
at the Grand Prairie racetrack between 6:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.
Workouts are open to the public for free as part of the Daybreak
at Lone Star program from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. mornings through
Oct. 29. The viewing will be extended Saturday for the turf works
scheduled at 10 a.m. after the main track closes.
Dynever (pointing to the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Classic
– Powered by Dodge) plans to be the first Breeders’
Cup contender to breeze Saturday at about 7 a.m., according to trainer
Christophe Clement’s assistant, Christophe Lorieul.
Roses in May (Classic) will likely appear at about 8:30 a.m. following
the renovation break, as he has done the last three mornings since
arriving Tuesday, for a five-furlong effort.
Trainer Michael Stidham hopes to work Culinary ($1 million Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Fillies) but will wait until the morning to decide
whether to go early or after the break.
Kitten’s Joy ($2 million John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf),
Magistretti (Turf) and Wonder Again ($1 million VO5 Breeders’
Cup Filly & Mare Turf) are scheduled to take to the turf course
after the main track closes at 10 a.m. A fourth horse, trainer Paddy
Gallagher’s $100,000 Texas Turf Stakes hopeful Needwood Blade,
will also be on the inner course.
Other contenders already on the grounds with plans to breeze in
coming days include Sense of Style (Juvenile Fillies), who trainer
Patrick Biancone said will work Sunday; Royal Regalia ($1.5 million
NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile), who trainer Justin Nixon said
will work Monday “as if he’s in” while needing
a defection to draw into the race; and Bwana Charlie ($1 million
Breeders’ Cup Sprint), who trainer Steve Asmussen said will
work Tuesday.
Beginning Saturday, horses pre-entered to the Breeders’ Cup
will bear name-embossed purple saddlecloths at Lone Star.
Beginning Sunday, the turf course will be open daily from 7:30
a.m. to 8 a.m. for horses pointing to the Breeders’ Cup or
Lone Star stakes.
