October 21: Thirteen Breeders'
Cup Horses Take To Track Thursday (October 21, 2004)-
Local racing fans got their first look at 13 Breeders' Cup World
Thoroughbred Championships contenders stabled in Grand Prairie,
Texas on Thursday during the first morning of "Daybreak at
Lone Star," a free daily program open to the public during
training hours from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The temperature was about
70 degrees with light breezes after sunrise at 7:30 a.m.
First on the track was locally based Arlington Breeders' Cup Sprint
Handicap winner Gold Storm (pointing to the $1 million Breeders'
Cup Sprint), who came out immediately after the gap opened for a
1 ½-mile gallop. It was Gold Storm's first time on the track
since a five-furlong breeze Monday in 1:00 3/5.
Dynever, the 2003 Lone Star Derby winner and third in last year's
$4 million Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge, was out at
7 a.m. to prepare for another shot at North America's richest race.
"He jogged the wrong way a mile and he galloped a mile-and-a-quarter,"
said Christophe Lorieul, exercise rider and assistant to trainer
Christophe Clement. "He's good. He's been here before so he
knows."
Also out early was Hopeful winner Afleet Alex ($1.5 million Bessemer
Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile), who galloped 1 ½ miles for
trainer Tim Ritchey at 6:30 a.m.
"He handled it pretty good this morning," said Ritchey's
exercise rider Sam Cabrera.
Magistretti ($2 million John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf) and Sense
of Style ($1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies), trainer Patrick
Biancone's pair, galloped about 1 ½ miles and schooled in
the paddock. Afterwards, both horses spent 10 to 15 minutes breathing
through a machine in their stalls that provides medication to the
lungs.
Others that exercised before the renovation break were Bwana Charlie
(Sprint), Culinary (Juvenile Fillies), Royal Regalia ($1.5 million
NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile) and Wonder Again ($2 million Breeders'
Cup Distaff - Presented by Nextel).
After the half-hour break from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., Dale Romans
brought out his heavy hitters one at a time. Roses in May (Classic)
and Kitten's Joy (Turf) both galloped about 1 ½ miles.
"They really seem to be doing well," Romans said.
Indy Groove (Distaff) also came to the track late in the morning
for maintenance.
Domestic Dispute made his first appearance after flying in Wednesday
from Southern California with Texas Turf Stakes nominee Needwood
Blade.
"They both traveled superb," said Mickey Brennan, assistant
and gallop boy for trainer Paddy Gallagher.
The Strub Stakes winner Domestic Dispute was on the main track
at 8:45 a.m. Thursday.
"I jogged him a mile and got a little gallop into him,"
Brennan said. "I just let her have a look around."
Domestic Dispute was pre-entered in the Mile and the Sprint, but
appears to be leaning toward his first preference in the Mile. The
4-year-old colt intends to work over the turf course this weekend.
