October 19: Bwana Charlie Blazes
in Bullet Work at Lone Star (October 19, 2004)-
Bwana Charlie, winner of the Grade II Amsterdam at Saratoga, prepared
for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint with a five-furlong workout
Tuesday in :59 2/5 at Lone Star Park, home of the Breeders' Cup
World Thoroughbred Championships on Oct. 30.
"It was a nice work and he looked good," said Darren
Fleming, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. "He did it real
easy - nice, smooth and relaxed. He was real comfortable and galloped
out great."
Fleming said he caught Bwana Charlie galloping out six furlongs
in 1:12 1/5. The effort, which came at about 7 a.m., was termed
as being done "handily" by the track clocker.
"He worked awesome," said Bwana Charlie's regular exercise
rider Carlos Roses. "He was on the bit the whole way and he
relaxed good. He galloped out very strong and as I crossed the wire
my skin was like chicken skin he was so impressive. He's a very
tough horse and he knows the business. Every time I take him by
the wire, he knows what he's going to do."
Bwana Charlie finished second last time out in the Oct. 2 $100,000
Alysheba Breeders' Cup Stakes at Lone Star, a race he was heavily
favored in off a troubled fourth in Saratoga's Grade I King's Bishop.
"I think it was just an unfortunate race," Fleming said
of the Alysheba. "There was a horse loose on the lead by 10
that he tried to catch."
The announcement of horses pre-entered for the eight Breeders'
Cup World Thoroughbred Championships events will come Wednesday
morning.
Updates on Breeders' Cup Contenders Stabled at Lone Star
MAGISTRETTI (Turf)/SENSE OF STYLE (Juvenile Fillies) - Both of
trainer Patrick Biancone's Breeders' Cup contenders, along with
undercard stakes nominees Spanish Chestnut and Ball Four, went to
the track at 6:30 a.m. for one-mile jogs. The Biancone contingent
also visited the paddock for a schooling session that assistant
Cyril Deplanques said went "very well." Desplanques explained
that Magistretti and Sense of Style are both relaxed pros, but that
paddock visits are part of the routine for Biancone's horses at
any new track. Magistretti and Sense of Style will be out at about
the same time Wednesday to gallop one mile.
CULINARY (Juvenile Fillies) - Trainer Michael Stidham's undefeated
Arlington-Washington Lassie winner walked the shedrow of Barn C3
the morning after her arrival. Assistant Rico Rosas said Culinary
would be on the track Wednesday for a jog at 6:30 a.m.
GOLD STORM (Sprint) - The Arlington Breeders' Cup Sprint Handicap
winner walked the shedrow of trainer C.W. "Bubba" Cascio's
Barn B1 after an impressive five-furlong breeze Monday in 1:00 3/5.
The trainer said he would probably walk Gold Storm one more day
Wednesday and is likely to gallop the horse up to the race without
any more official workouts. "I wouldn't be doing myself any
justice by trying to get him any fitter," Cascio said.
